6mm .825 Jackets & Bullet question's ?

Squirting cores today and thinking about bullet weights? Is there an equation on how much the lead core should weight or is it just by trial and error? I know we want the lead to be into the Ogive, or radius of the jacket to support the jacket during point up, but how far up toward the point is to much? Meaning in theory an .825 jacket will make good 67- 72 gr. bullets, but 74+gr bullets may not work due to core length (BEING TO LONG) and balance of bullet? Better question? is there an optimum weight for each jacket length, or is it just pure personal preference and testing. Hopefully some of the Bullet makers will share their thoughts on this subject. Thanks

I don't think it's good to go beyond 68 gr. for the typical benchrest bullet made with an .825 jacket. A little less makes a good bullet but if you go beyond you're asking for trouble. All you need is something that will make a hole in the paper....something good.

Don't over think it! Keep your bullets between 66 and 68 and go forth and do great things. When you use up all of your .825s you can get some 820s from me to try. A little shorter jacket stabilizes a bit easier and they are killers!

Lead length..

I agree with Bart..

Though what core seat punches do you have...
All lots of jackets from any jacket maker have very slight differences from the previous lots....
It's good to have several punches to make your favorite weight...

Or... One can do JUST FINE by altering the core weight / length to account for a slight change in jacket lot
for your given punch /punches... For instance.... Rather that a 66.0gr... Either a 66.1 or 65.9 or a bit more... What's important
is these all go together and are to be thoroughly noted...

What's Ideal in as far as core length.... Hummm Well.. Don't know but I like the.... Uhhhh just enough "core support" for the
ogive point.. Once in the point die, my shorter / lighter core squirts up the ogive just a bit in contact with the interior flutes
that are forming inside the point... Just enough to support the point but not too far up the flutes that IMOP "can" cause
slight inconsistent "lead fill" of the point...
Works for me..
The Berger Columns come to mind, that is similar to what I do. An shoot DOT'S..

.790's - I like to make 61.5 - 64.5
.825's - I like to make 65.0 - 67.5
Little "lighter" than most per given jacket lenght... But, works for me and my punches / typical jacket's....

WHAT IS IMPORTANT..... BY FAR.......................

>GREAT EXCELLENT SUPER DUPER< Bullet Jackets....................! Whom ever the maker...........!
You'll know pretty quick when you DON'T have the above jackets....:p

Thanks Cale

Outstanding explanation Cale, Thank you. I appreciate your input & thoughts. Kinda supports my thoughts, but I have not made enough bullets to have a clear objective or theory. My problem is, I've been reading and thinking to much, I guess it's time to warm the dies up and pull the handles for a while, while keeping good notes and shooting these bullets. Thanks again.
