6mm-284 Barrel

I have a lead on a new barrel for a project I am thinking of.
It is a 6mm, 1-10 twist, 27", should finish 26".
Question is the 1-10 twist enough for the heavier bullets? I know a 9-1/4" twist will.
The reason I am looking at this barrel is the price is really good.
I don't expect to use at 1000yds but for hunting and varmiting up to 600 yds.
Thanks

In a wildcat 6mm I use 95 grain FB bullets with 10 twist Muzzle vel is 3300 fps... The various formulas and bullet suppliers say that the bullet I use it about all you can stabilize in that twist barrel. It works for me real well.

Go get it. A 6mm/284 barrel won't last long anyway.

I forget what Bill Shehane got on his, but I had one where the reamer was run in .200 short. That turns out to be the same capacity as a 6mm Ackley (6mm/7x57 improved). Believe I got almost 800 rounds on the 6 Ackley before it was too cooked to win. The velocity had fallen off 150+ fps at that point, and the throat was an old memory.

A 1-10 twist should be good for bullets around 95 gains or so (bullet length matters more than weight).

IMHO a 6-284 is a waste in a 26" bbl, a 243AI or 6 x 47L would be better. A 6-284 really starts showing it's leggs in 29"+ bbl lengths. The velocity(lack of) just doesn't justify all that powder in a short bbl.

I have a 1 in 10 Hart barrel that shoots 3200 to 3400 with the 105 A-Max chambered in 6x284. It is 29 inches long.
I have a used and worn out 12 twist 26-inch barrel chambered in 6x284 that shoots 87-grain V-Maxes at 3600 plus FPS. Kills PDs at 1,000 yards.

6mm-284 barrel

The barrel I am looking at is a 6mm 1-10 twist 27" long.
I plan on threading and chambering this barrel myself for a 98 action I have had for quite some time.
I purchased a lathe (1953 Sheldon 12x36) last year and have been building tooling and so forth for accurizing the action. The action is complete so its time for the barrel.
The barrel is only $100. As this is my first barrel job I wont feel like I'm out a whole lot if things dont turn out like I expect.

The machine work will be good experiance. My comment was more about what to expect velocity wise with a short BBL and the 6-284 (just not a good fit IMHO) BTDT. Good luck with your work.
