A couple years ago I did a mini test of 5 different primers in a 6ppc. Just 5 shots each. Same load, same bullet, just different primer. Primers were CCI 400, BR4, Win SRP, Fed 205 and 205 match. Not much difference in groups but the CCI 400's gave the best ES and Sd. Not enough difference in velocity to amount to anything either. Personally I shoot Federals, both reg and match. But don't mix them.
Thanks Donald, I will give them a try. It seems that the 6br shooters are convinced that the 6br works best with the 450 versus the 400. I wonder if anyone else has done a similar or more extensive test?
Lynn,
do folks have the same popped primer problem with the BR4's? Have you or anyone tried the CCI 400 primers to see if they can handle the higher pressures above 2900 fps? I only have 100 ea. of BR4's and Rem. 7-1/2's on hand and am unable to find any 450's or Russian primers anywhere, that's why I'm looking at the 400's as a possible alternative.
Lynn, I am located in Culpeper, VA., that's about 45 min. west of Quantico and 45 min. south west of Fairfax. I sure would appreciate that unselfish gesture Lynn.
The difference between CCI SR BR primers and their regular small rifle primer is the quality control used in material selection and production. It is not a different mixture or configuration. They are “BALLISTICALLY EQUIVALENT”. The cups and anvil are suppose to be the more uniform. The operator is suppose to be the best from the most experienced. The line is run slower and inspected more often. See Chapter 4, CCI Bench Rest Primers, in the Speer Reloading Manual #12 and probably many other editions.
Although the odds should be against it, you may find that a particular lot of regular small rifle give a lower SD than going to a particular lot of bench rest primers. That said I’ve always found the Russian and CCI magnum primers, in that order, to give the best SDs with the 6BR and big bullets using Varget & R15. But not necessarily so with the 22BR, nor the 30BR.
There are a few other BR shooters that live in the Culpepper area also. Plan on shooting at the Fairfax Rod & Gun Club with us. The club is located at the end of Signal Hill Road in Manassas.
