Hello all,
I was wondering if there are any rules regarding using a long range pistol in 600 yard matches. I have two long range pistols, one is an XP 100 chambered in 6.5-284 with a 17" Kreiger barrel sitting in an HS Precision Pistol stock and the other is a Savage Target action sitting in a Lee Six Pistol stock with a custom barrel also( I'm actually not finished with the later firearm yet). I have shot several under .25" five shot groups with the 6.5-284 in our 100 yard indoor range but have yet to stretch it out yet. I live in northern Arkansas but would travel to say Oklahoma, Tennessee, Missouri ect to shoot in matches. Any info would be appreciated.Thank You

Mike,

I shoot IBS 600 in Oak Ridge TN. I am not sure, but I think you could in IBS. Check with IBS for sure. LG would be 17 lb limit only. HG no limits. but no brake.

It would have to sit on rest with sand on front & rear.

Back in 1998 and for few years thereafter, BR pistols competed in a few tournaments head to head with BR rifles at 100 and 200 yards and won their share of fake-wood trophies. It kinda died out and I'm not sure if anyone still competes with pistols.

Anyway, AFAIK, it's not been done at Long Range but I don't see why you couldn't do it. NBRSA rules are about as open as you could ask for and you'd probably have no trouble getting the pistol OK'd for competition.

Best be careful though. If you beat too many rifles someone will B**** about it and propose a rule change.:cool:

What is the Savage Target Pistol action, BTW???

Good Luck

Ray,
Its is Savages newest venture, this action looks as stout as some custom actions, its stainless, has no bottom cutout, has a small opening port for loading cartriges and you can get left port, right bolt or vise versa. Not only is it a beefy action, it has the new BR accu-trigger which is adjustable from a few ounces to a couple pounds. Dont get me wrong, its NOT a benchrest action but its pretty dang close for a production like item. You should take a look at them. Thanks for all the information guys.

My 2 Cents

At this years NBRSA 600 Yard Nationals in Sacramento Ajaxx45 is bringing his longrange pistol to compete against the rifles.
Like Mark said you still need the rear rest under the pistol grip to meet the rules requirement.A leather pad filled with sand should work if its 1/2 inch thick.
