6 PPC Short

We recently made up a 6 PPC barrel with the shoulder short by 0.093 as we had a almost new barrel that came out 18.5" long with the new chamber. We shoot 95% of the time at only 100 yards due to range limitations. So far this short barrel with the short chamber has been shooting quite good. @ 100 yards it seems to be equal to our better 6 PPC barrels.

Have any of you experimented with a 6 PPC short in the past?

Did you just use a standard 6PPC reamer or did you have one made to keep the base end standard size?

What powder is working for you?

Thanks,
Jerry

There are many folks here shooting a .100 short 22ppc. I dont see any real reason to shorten a 6ppc other than just for fun, and im all for that!! A short 6BR might have some merit? Lee

Chamber was made using one of our standard 6 PPC reamers. Bob left it .093 short as this was as short as it could go and still have the Laupa 220 case head fit. Neck and shoulder are standard 6 PPC (0.262)

Been using H4198E, N-133, H-332 and RL-7. The H4198 is a little fast. The RL-7 shows potential. Still early in the experiment.

If you could get 100 other people to try it you might get some real idea if it actually had the potential to be better than a standard PPC. Or if you can get 2 or 3 people to win 5 or 10 big matches with it you might get a following and people to start shooting it . My guess is all you are doing shortening it .093" is making your powder selection more limited.

I have been playing with doing this for over a year I am sure its been done before but I think it has potential. If you look at the 30BR and the case capacity to bore size ratio the PPC is considerably overbore. The 30BR will arguably run with the PPC for accuracy and the slower twist barrels are nice also. One other thing is the 1000's of rounds you can get out of the 30BR compared to the considerably less 700-1200 rounds out of the PPC. The PPC shortened would increase the Barrel life slightly and it is already so efficient that you should not loose a considerable amount of speed. The only thing I see as a disadvantage is what Mr.Grosbier says and if you must have 3300+ velocities. A good idea and I will probably try this with my next 6MM barrel. Its gonna be fun. By the way I in no way am knocking any other oppinions or ideas and only want to add to the discussion.

Johnson Gunsmith Thank you for your reply. We had a near new BR barrel with the shank cut off. As we could only make a 18" or so barrel we decided to give it a try. Bob has been shooting it for a while now. The more we learn about it the better we like it. Like most older shooters we have quite a few of the older BR barrels around the shop so we look for things to do with them. This may be one solution.

We used one of our standard PPC reamers for this project and that sized the 0.093" set back. A better design with a new reamer may be a little more setback and a longer neck. We have a 22 Waldog reamer with a long neck (0.125 Short) that works. Our thinking is the longer neck helps with barrel life.

These short cases seem to shoot good with H4198 which is a lot cheaper and easier to get than the N-133 here in SE Florida.

Most of the shooters at our range are older guys who love to shoot. Few care much anymore about driving hours to go to a match. Typically we shoot two or three days a week and get off 50 to 100 rounds a day. That adds up to a lot of powder and bullets over time. Being able to use the older barrels is a real plus with these shooters. These guys understand that reading the wind is usually more important than having the "perfect" rifle. I have noted that I am the only shooter at our range who owns a 30 BR.

Like you I was hoping to hear from someone who has worked with the shorter case in the past.

We just push the shoulder back on the 6 PPC case and fire form.

With the 65 gr Berger 23.0 gr of H4198 clocked at just below 3,200. The 24.0 gr load shoots a little tighter.

With the 60 gr Berger 25.5 works in this barrel.

These loads are with Federal primers. Loads in other barrels will likely be different.
