I have a Savage LRPV 6 mm Norma BR with a 12" twist that I use for 100 and 200 yd. paper targets. I have been using the Berger 68 gr. FB with .1 to .2 accuracy. I am interested in the Savage Benchrest Rifle in the same caliber but it only comes in an 8" twist. So my question is: I will primarily been shooting paper at 100 to 200 yds. What bullet weight could I use to be stabilized at the 100 to 200 yd. distant? Does anyone use the Savage Benchrest Rifle at these distances. Thanks in advance, DRPLP

Well, you could just put the 12" twist on the BR action & stock. The 68 gr will work just fine in the 8" twist as will heavier bullets up to 105 or so. Come to think of it, just get the benchrest stock and you're good to go.

I have the BR rifle with the 8 inch twist. I use the Berger 108 match bullet, 29.5 grains of Varget, Federal 205m primers and Lapua brass. I haven't had a reason to change. It does great at 100 and 200 yards and I don't have to worry so much about wind. I'm going to try the load for F-class, but may have to go up a half or full grain for best results at 500 and 600. Also, the 105 Berger Hybrid may be a good choice for the longer ranges. Partial secant ogive but not so fussy about seating depth as the full-blown VLD.

If you're getting .1 to .2 inch accuracy -- esp at 200 yards -- you don't want to do anything but sign up for the matches. You're already in the top 5, and you're not going to beat Tony, Wayne, Gene, Larry, Charles (Huckaba, not me), etc. For that, just hope they don't show up at the match you're at. Nothing you can buy or have built will get you past them. Otherwise, those groups are going to win more than your share. Don't be greedy.

I have a Savage LRPV in 6BR with the 12'' twist and I get great accuracy with Varget or H4895 and the Berger 80 gr. FB at 100 yds.

+1 Charles.

DRPLP. are you accepting offers on that rifle? I would be very interested after a trip to the range with you and the rifle!
