6 br Rem vs Lapua

A friend of mine is buying a used rifle at a large chain sporting goods store. Rem 700/ Shillen 30 inch tube/ 1-8 twist/ .270 neck. They borescoped the bbl and it looked good. I remember, long before I got involved with my dasher, I seem to remember a discusion about the diff between the 6 br Rem and the 6 br Lapua. Is there a difference in chambers???? I can't seem to help think it is like any other comp chambering based on the 6 br lapua case, given the Shillen/1-8/.270 neck thing going on. I warned them to check the loaded rounds carfully, as a .270 neck on all of my Lapua loaded rounds would be getting kind of tight...all of my no turn loads come in at .269 loaded. using three diff lots of Lapua brass.

What else should they look out for, safety wise??

Thanks,
Tod

I believe it's the 6mmBR Norma that you're suggesting, not Lapua. Lapua certainly makes excellent brass for the 6mmBR Norma though. :)

The remaining bore life can't really be accurately estimated, regardless of what a borescope inspection might imply. Nor can you know how a rifle will shoot until you try it. I'd want a test drive, if I were a local buyer, or at least an assurance that if it shot like cr*p, that you could return it for full store credit towards another purchase. This would be predicated on factory (Lapua brand) ammo, not hand loads.

Also, what's the asking price? If it's such a deal that you could afford to put money into it (like rebarreling, or a bedding job, etc.), then that would be peace of mind.

Remember, everything's negotiable, until you hear otherwise. I'd offer half of the asking price, and see how far the store comes down.

Opps....correct on the lapua/ norma thing.....my bad!!

Not my buisness on the whole good deal/bad deal thing. He knows the risk about buying a used rifle. He also said that they will not allow him to shoot it. Nuff said about that. He asked my advise and informed him that I would be nervous about buying a used rifle with a "custom" bbl....safety issues!!!! Everyone and thier brother has different reamers for the same cartridge. I just don't want him the blow the thing up!!!:eek:

Tod If the gun shop is any good at all they should be able to put him in contact with the original owner or the gun smith to fill in the ??? that he may have .

Good point there. Could very well be that the rifle is on consignment, meaning the owner could reclaim it, and allow the interested party to shoot it while standing by to answer questions, etc.

If the owner and shop are reputable, that seems like a reasonable notion.

What sort of stock and trigger are on it?
