6.5x284 question

I just purchased a beautiful custom 6.5x284 rifle in a blueprinted 40X action, 30" Krieger 1/8 barrel and laminate stock. It was such a bargain I couldn't pass it up. Plus, it was smithed by a friend of mine who is a master rifle builder. The problem is, with 142 gr. Match Kings at full velocity, the muzzle blast and recoil, yes recoil, are ferocious. I'm used to 6PPC levels and this is no fun. My question is, can this caliber be loaded down to more managable levels and still be accurate. My brief break in with full power loads showed great potential for accuracy. If I can't get an accurate slower load, I will have to sell it. :(

It's not a PPC and will have more recoil. You can use a brake on light guns(up to 17lb). What's it weigh now?--Mike

without a brake it takes man handling, with a brake a 13year old girl can shoot it. Or re-chamber to a 6.5 x 47Lapua with a brake and you will have a sweet shooting gun with probably more inherent accuracy. Keep weight close to 17#s.

Rick-I don't know what you mean by full loads. I shoot 51.4g of 4831sc at 2876 and think the recoil mild. I too have a 30" Krieger with one of Tom Manners great carbon fiber stocks, which means ir's probably lighter than yours. I guess I don't understand recoil as defined by some. That's my prob, not yours. V/R Greg

I'm shooting 50.0 gr. of 4831SC and it rocks my teeth loose. People at the adjoining benches were griping about the concussion! I do admit as I get older, my guns get smaller and less violent. Maybe I should stick to rimfires!! :p

6.5 284

mine is shooting 49 grains of 4350 and is right at 2930fps. mine has a brake and is awesome to shot if you want to sell it PM me!!
