6.5 grendal

Can I shoot the 6.5 grendal in 600-1000 yards and do any good.
There is also a 6mm in this round also correct would that be better just asking cause I dont want to change bolts I would like to keep my ppc boltface incase I dont like the longer range..

The 6.5 Grendel is nothing but a 6.5 PPC Improved. The 6 Grendel is, of course, a 6 PPC Improved.

Could you use either at 1000 yards and be competitive? Probably not.

At 600 yards? Yes, in good conditions, if you're a good shooter.

For 1,000 yards, the simple choice would be to use a 6BR, BRX, or Dasher. Or perhaps the 6.5x47 Laupa in a 6mm. You will have to turn the rims to fit a PPC boltface, but that's not hard.

In spite of all the internet interest in the small 6mms at 1,000 yards, I believe the big 30s still win more matches, day in & day out. If you can put up with that, a .500 B.C. bullet at around 3,000 is competitive, and you can reach that with a small 6mm.

The biggest change for short-range benchresters is that you cannot see you bullet holes in the target. Some younger eyes apparently can see the holes at 600 yards, but I never could, even with a .30 and a Nightforce.

6/6.5 Grendel

A few of us have been playing with the 6/6.5 Grendel for 600 yd. IBS . We are using 8" twist barrels for the 105 to 108 gr. bullets. You can expect 2700 to 2800 fps. with the 6mm version of the Grendel and probably better accuracy than the 6/6.5x47mm lapua. It can be pushed faster but accuracy suffers and ES numbers tend to raise in my experience. I also have a reamer for a 22 cal. version for 80 gr. VLD bullets. Right now that project is looking good as well. It seems the capacity of the necked down case is about right for the 22 cal. 80 gr. VLD's the 90 gr.VLd's proved to be a bit much and loads were hard on brass. Both are very efficient and are capable of winning matches at 600 yds.. Not sure about 1000 yds. maybe not enough horsepower.

Most of my experience at 1000 is in LR prone matches, where we've got to wait on pit service before firing the next shot. In good, steady conditions, that's a blessing - in poor conditions, with quick, twitchy changes, speed of pit service can and usually does make a significant difference in a good shooter's score.

While I've seen some impressive groups & scores shot with 6BRs & Dashers in the one (count 'em - one) 1000yd. BR match I've shot, I tend to believe that the small 6s have a better chance of routine success in LR prone HP matches than in LR BR. We usually have 30 min. to fire unlimited sighters and 20rds. for score in a prone match, and in anything but really unstable conditions, that negates a good portion of the advantages the big .30s have over the little sixes.

On the other side of the coin, the light recoil of a BR or Dasher makes it easier to do the fast shooting it often takes to catch a condition in a BR match. Pick your poison - but for myself, I'd prefer not to use anything smaller than a Dasher at 1000.

The big issue is wind.

I shoot F class so like high power, we have alot of time between shots to think about what went wrong. At least we know where the last one went.

Small changes in wind will have big changes in drift the slower/lower BC slug you send. The PPC just doesn't have the case capacity to go heavy and fast.

On a nice calm day or one with consistent conditions, anything has the potential of doing well. In the matches I have shot it is anything but consistent (maybe consistently bad), I need all the help I can get to keep from being bounced around.

I push a 139gr 6.5 Scenar as fast as I can.

You shoot BR very differently but wind will eventually push you out.

have any of you tried at 600yds. any of those 30Cal. "Grendel" or 30BR improved types that prevail at score shoots? any good results?

I was going to shoot my 30BR at a F-Class shoot at 600 yard. Went and looked at what wind would do with it , not good. So left it at home and used another gun.
