New to the site. Have been wanting to build a 6.5 Creedmoor on a 700 Rem action. Any tips or advise? Long or short action, bolt face, barrel twist, tooling etc....

Thanks,

JHolland

Short action, .473" bolt face, 8.5 twist, SAAMI reamer with std .199" freebore works well. A .170" freebore may be easier to get most of the common bullets into the lands at mag length. .170" freebore usually works with factory ammunition but not always. Manson typically has the 6.5 Creedmoor SAAMI reamers and gauges on the shelf, he can shorten one to a .170" fairly quick.

What WSnyder said. I use 8 twist barrels. I've worn out probably 6-6.5 Creedmoor reamers. Standard SAAMI works-shoots fine.

Thanks guys. Sounds easy enough just needed some direction.

Dave, I see the 6.5x47 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor and .260 Remington as being three peas in a pod. Any particular reason to pick one over the other besides Lapua brass available for the 6.5x47, factory ammo available for the 6.5 Creedmoor, seating depth on .260 Remington limited by magazine length? I'm really surprised that the .260 has had so little factory support. The 6.5-284 would make a 4th pea with more velocity and resultant shorter barrel life. If you were going to go with one of these 6.5's which would you choose?

Mike,
I chamber many more Creedmoor's than the others. Mostly for the convenience of having good factory ammo. The guys shooting 6.5X47's swear by them. They say the tune window is wider when using 4350 . I've never shot one myself. I do have two barrels, a 6 and a 25 based on that case. Can't say I'm wild about the small primer. I had trouble reading pressure signs. The 260 may get more factory support. Can't say why but there may be a tremor in the force. I'd probably pick the Creedmoor just because I have friends in low places and I have their phone numbers. But it's seldom the case, more about barrels, bullets, gunsmith's and the customer. Not necessarily in that order.
