thinking about purchasing a 6.5 284 with a 26 inch barrel. i was wondering what velocities to expect when using 142 SMK or 140 bergers. the rifle has a 1/8 twist. do you all think i could use it for varmint hunting out to 1000 yards or do i need a longer barrel for more velocity.

You should be OK to 1000 yards. I would guess you can get 2950 FPS out of that barrel which is plenty of velocity to make it to 1000 yards.
 
My match load in a 8 twist Krieger at 31" in my Bat light gun gave 3040fps.

Same barrel cut to 26" ( 1" off the muzzle, 4" off the shank and rechambered to a 700) with the same load gives 2961 ave.
