6.5-284 or .270 WSM?

I was thinking of making a switch barrel gun. Right now it is a 6mm Norma BR. I was going to use it for mostly hunting out west and maybe some F-class shooting.

I never realised how slow the velocity of the 6.5-284 was until I looked up the ballistics.

Wouldn't a .270 WSM be a better choice since it will give me a lot more velocity and flatter shooting with the same weight bullets? Would the .270 WSM be competitive at 600 & 1000 yds?

Try finding....

Good match grade bullets in .270. There are a few - but it's much easier to find 6.5 and 7mm target bullets.

Flatness of trajectory means very little in known-distance target shooting.

Would the 7mm WSM be a better choice than the 6.5-284 for hunting long range for Mules & prong horns? I see that there are many more accurate bullets for the 7mm.

The 7mm WSM has to be the best choice of all the WSM cases. Slightly larger capacity and with the variety of 7mm bullet choices it is simply hard to beat if you like the WSMs.

Make no mistake though. The 6.5x284 is a match winner. Thumping through the pages of ballistics tables will never tell you why there are so many long range shooters winning matches with a 6.5x284 every weekend.

im a die hard 270WSM fan, but i wouldn't choose one for 1000yd shooting due to bullet availability.if you want to shoot mulies at 400yds, it will get the job done. ( i have 2-270WSM's , one for big game, and one for varmints, and the varmint rifle is pure hell on prarie dogs past 500yds, but after 6-700 the low BC bullets get killed by the wind). for what your asking the 7WSM would be a solid choice.

Yesterday with my 270 WSM

In a remote part of Nevada desert I was blowing holes through 1/2" plate grade 50 steel. I love my 270 wsm . 71.5grs of Magpro produce nearly 3,200 fps with 150 gr bullet 24" bbl.

I've got both the 6.5x284 & a 270WSM, the 270 WSM is NOT the tool for 600-1000 yard benchwork,,,,,,,,,BUT, if you want to smoke deer size game out to 426 yards(sorry that as far as I've had a chance), the 270WSN is a fine round, mine is a hart 26in Varmint Taper, loves Sierra 130 GameKings at 3375 ft/sec and really loves Sierra 110 ProHunters at 3550 ft/sec, both do a great job on Georgia size Whitetails,,,,,,,,,,

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The 6.5mm bullets sure do buck the wind better than any other bullet I know of. The 6.5 really makes you a believer in the wind. Use what ever you want, matters not to me, but you did ask about the best? Both eats barrels faster than I like. My chose is still the 6.5 X 55. Gives me all I want and barrel life is the best of all the many 6.5mm I have chambers for.

I've heard nothin' but good, when it comes to the 6.5 X 55 Swede.
