Hey there Hydehunter!
You need to use more powder. Most that load H4831sc are at 50.0 to 52.0
grains/ or H4350 48.0 to 49.5 grains. Taht amount of powder will get you
2950 to 3000 fps.
Good Luck & Good shooting,
Gary.

when I got up to 48.8 gr of H4831sc I had way to much pressure in fact the ejector hole on the bolt face was making marks on the brass and even shaved enough brass to keep the plunger stuck down in the bolt face.I just wonder if the brass is to soft because the primers look good no flattening, its driving me nuts.

My first barrel liked 53.5 H4831SC with moly 142 SMKs and Berger 140s. The replacement is working well at 53.0, no moly.

Dunno what to tell you about your throat, it does sound too short, especially in the LA 721.

About Short Throat.

Just how much gap is there between case neck and start of rifeling? Doesent sound like there is much leeway but some times a big change in seating depth is all that is required. I have Remington 700 Bdl that wont shoot unless the bullets are seated 2/10" off the lands. Other loads and rifles like them touching, the only way to find out is to systematicly move your seating depth around. Can make the difference between a 2" group and a 1/2" group.;)

Something is way wrong. I shoot 51grs. in mine with 140 bergers with no problems what so ever. This may not be your problem but have you checked your scale against another scale to be shore you are not over charging your cases? Just a thought. I read of this happening before. Good luck with your new gun.

I have a Shilen barrel I need to send back to Shilen because it is bent.

I dialed in muzzle and breech and it was wobbling .100" in the belly. I indicated just the breech, and the muzzle was off 1/4"

Ask your gunsmith how straight yours was.

I have a Krieger 6.5mm x 8.5 in the lathe now, and it is as straight as a laser.

What I run:

28" Shilen Select 1:8" #7
Howa 1500 action

Norma brass
140gr Berger moly coated
Fed 210 Match
53.0 gr RL22
.005" off the lands and grooves.

Shoots about .3 moa for me with regularity.

6.5 X .284 Load

I have a 6.5 X .284 and I found a new load for this summer. It is 53.0 gr. N560 ignited by Fed GM215M topped with a 140 gr. Berger VLD bullet.

Mr. Hydehunter, try Lapua brass before you do anything.

When you had the rifle built , did you tell your smith what bullet you planned on using? Sound to me like you need more free bore in it. Is it a no turn neck , or is it a tight neck ? My 6.5 284 has a 100 thou. free bore to use the vld bullets. I use 50 gr N160 with JLK 140 gr bullets and it is extreamly accurate , not a barrel burner at that load. Only about 2700 FPS but acuracy first in my book. John

My last 6.5-284 (Norma) rebarrel also has a shorter throat. I just went about my normal procedures and got good accuracy with the bullets just off the lands. I tried bringing the bullets out a little and pressures went WAY up.

I'm using 53.0 H4831SC with 142 SMKs or Berger 140s.
