a friend wants me to reload him some shells for a 284 win. that he bought from another friend. the problem is he cannot find ammo or brass anywhere on the planet, but the other day he thought he found some brass from a dealer in Missouri but when it arrived it was 6.5/284 norma brass. my question is, can I run this brass over a .284 mandrel and load it and shoot it from this 284 win. was the only change to this 6.5/284 just necking it down from 284 or is there a difference in the shoulder or length.. I mean I can trim the brass if needed but will it possibly be to short after I neck it up to 284 or am I good to go.

Usually when you neck down like 284 to 6.5-284 the necks get a thous. thicker. If you have a tight neck you may have to turn but if you expand up from 6.5-284 to 284 it might just be a little thinner. You should be able to do that and load them. I would use a long tapered expander like K&M or a Sinclair.

Liability and such

This reply maybe off subject. In today's world there are just too many lawyers, and too many people looking to hit the lotto in a law suite.
For that reason I do not reload any ammo for anyone else but myself. Sorry to say it is the way it is today. If you modify the cases and reload for him, and something happens (even if there is nothing wrong with your reload) You personally could be looking at a law suite.
Just my thoughts

Nobody claimed to "not know anything" they just didn't choose to reply.

So here ya go, blow them back out with shotgun powder, start at around 35gr and work up. The formula for this may be found in this book. http://www.amazon.com/Designing-For...TF8&qid=1385341104&sr=8-1&keywords=ken+howell

You'll get perty thin necks but I guess you know what you want.

Altho from your op I'm a little leery to advise you at all. You need to MEASURE for the questions you're asking. You need to establish the parameters yourownself and make them spec. Nobody can tell you how to do it here......

74 minutes and no replies? That is hard to believe! Everyone knows you can get instant answers to anything on the internet.

Nowadays most .284 shooters use 6.5-284 brass. Whether is will work depends on the chamber. Years ago, many gunsmiths used "match" 284 reamers that were sized smaller than SAAMI spec to match the brass of the day which ran on the small side. The newer 6.5-284 Norma brass, especially Lapua runs larger and may not fit an older custom chamber. Like Al said, you just need to measure. If a new (un-modified) empty case does not easily fit the chamber, you likely will have problems.
