579 Forestor 308 Extractor

I broke the claw off the tip of my extractor yesterday. Ouch... I've gotten lost in the Beretta teleprompters a couple of times. Does anyone know if the Tubb or Harris (or others?) aftermarket Sako Extractors are interchangable with the original. (Sako Forestor, 308 family bolt face)

I've got a customer's Sako AII bolt in the shop, waiting on an extractor kit from Beretta. I tried a medium PTG extractor, but had no luck getting it to fit this bolt. I think your action was probably built before Beretta aquired Sako - if that's the case, you may have to call the outfit that has the older parts. This is according to what I was told when I called Beretta's customer service line. If I understood the Beretta guy, the outfit is called Whitewater, and their phone no. is: (316) 799-2509.

Many thanks for comments and e-mail. I spoke with a gentleman at SSS that informed me that the Tubb 2000 should be an appropriate replacement for my particular bolt. I have ordered the 2000 and the size "A" and will see which fits with the minimum stone work. I will post any results here for any interested.

works... and then some

Ordered the Tubbs T2000 and the Tubbs "A" extractor kits from Brownells to replace my broken piece. The original Sako Extractor measured 0.172 width, the Tubbs T2000 measured 0.168. The retaining pin is the same size (0.112) and the difference in length is negligible. The T2000 is a functional replacement for my early Sako 579 Forestor.

I ordered both sizes of extractors, just in case. The Tubb "A" extractor measures 0.230 width, with a retaining pin of 0.184. It could be made to fit I suppose but would require stoning to the correct width and turning down the retaining pin to 0.112 - 0.115 - not really viable.

What's really nice is that the tubb has a longitudinal slot milled in the extractor body just in front of the plunger. The slot is the perfect size for a dental probe to slide in and retract the plunger. Makes removal a snap compared to wedging small screwdrivers behind the extractor...

Thanks for the PM - I hadn't come back to check on this thread for a few days, and after getting an extractor for a M75 that doesn't fit, needed this info. The Tubb 2000 at .168" should work well in the .172" extractor slot in the bolt I have.

Now all I need to do is find someone who needs the wider extractor(s) that Beretta sent me...
