Checked out the wolf spring site listed in a thread below looking for springs for the 40X and they had these listed...

REMINGTON 40X - Rimfire Only
BLITZSCHNELL Load-rated striker springs

Factory - Reference Only.: 18 Lb.
Ratings available.................: 26 and 30 Lb.

What pound spring are most of you useing??? Thanks...

I went through this same thing a couple years ago. I bought all three springs from Wolf with terrible results. I installed the factory 18 pound spring and the rifle went back to shooting X's.
All 40X's aren't the same but this is what worked best in my civilian 40X benchrest rifle.
I wouldn't be afraid to go even lower like to a 16 pound spring and see what happens.
I ended up using one of the Wolf springs in my centerfire Panda which is still shooting well.

Both my 40X rimfire BR rifles have still have the factory springs and work very well. I don't see a need for a stronger spring, since ignition is great as is. A stronger spring than necessary only makes the bolt lift harder, and adds more vibration when the firing pin falls, in my opinion.
