40X questions

Howdy Gents,

I recently picked up a CMP Remington 40X. This is the "Rangemaster", early 60's vintage, and built on the 721 action (IIRC). Other than a Weaver scope with warne base/rings, refinishing the stock, and installing pillars the gun is stock.

I am looking for the hand stop assy. The Remington part# is 23005 which they call the front swivel assy. I intend to use the gun for NRA 1600 prone matches so I need a hand stop. A new stock isn't possible at this time. The hand stop isn't a dove tail attachment like the anschutz, Winchester, or 40XB. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

Second question, I notice the 40X seems to take a back seat to the Winchester 52's and anschutz's in prone matches but seems to be considered better to make into a bench rest gun. If I have that right, why is that so?

Last but not least, what path would you follow to get the best out of that gun for it's intended purpose if your budget was tight (sick momma, daughter in college, etc.)? I don't know what a better firing pin would bring and if a better trigger would help for prone.

Thanks in advance,
Russ

I think Champions Choice and some other places sell a rail for the front of the stock. It would require your cutting a groove in the forend to install it. I think they call it an accessory rail. It used to be around $15. This would give you complete adjustment and you could use any handstop they sell.

The last I heard, the CMP had brand new hand stops in sealed packages for around $25.

If the budeget is tight and you want to squeeze al lthe accuracy you can, get a 2 oz. trigger in it (perhaps a JARD conversion) and test all the ammo you can.

Buy as much as you can of the ammo that shoots the best.

After that, it will take smith work on the gun and you will soon reach a point of diminishing returns just prior to trueing the action and a custom barrel.

If you plan on serious competition with this rifle take it out and shoot it. If it will group really tight put a Jewell trigger in it. If it doesn't..then get some work done to it and put a Jewell trigger in it. Call champion shooters or champion choice for a handstop. You could just put a full rail in your stock. or find a crappy stock and hack that one up instead. The rest of your questions are personal preference IMHO.

After you put an accessory rail in it, you can mount a 3" wide plate to the rail to give you better stability on the front bag.

NRA says 3lb trigger pull

I guess that takes care of the Jewell trigger. I am probably in violation aready but haven't verified.

CMP will only sell you parts if you bought the gun from them and I bought it from a private party. The hand stops are long gone from what I have been able to find out. If anyone finds out different and can point me to a link that would be great. I guess I'll have to take a router to the stock. I was hoping someone ditched their original stock and had parts they didn't need anymore.

If I had a local benchrest club I'd go that way. I am not looking forward to a leather straight jacket and sweat shirt while laying on my belly on a hot and humid south florida day! Heat stroke comes to mind. Actually I got a hankering to try .45 ACP at 50 yards with one hand. That sounds like a challenge!

The gun does seem like a shooter but I'm too green to say for sure. Off the bench with good ammo (thanks Mr. Scott) and conditions I can hold the X ring (3/8" diameter) on a 50 meter target (10 shot groups). I think I did okay with what I got for my money, $750 with redfield palma rear and international front. When I get rich and famous I can get the action squared/sleeved, the old barrel cut back or a new one installed, drop it in a nice stock and have, I assume, a darn good gun.

Thanks all,
Russ

Try Outback Gun Parts at 812-945-0480. If he dosn't have one he probably knows someone who does.

I would not hack up your existing stock, instead I'd get a XB stock that already has the rail. It's a drop-in so no inletting issues and they are pretty easy to come by, about $75. Thanks, Douglas
