40X Bolt Tools

Newbie question. I'm gathering a few items to have in case I need to make repairs if needed. Don't want to travel a long distance and have a failure and not be able to make a repair on my rifle. The two most likely items I see are the trigger and firing pin with spring, and a third possibly is scope. Other than those I really can't see anything likely breaking. Anyway, got a spare trigger and now looking to get a spare firing pin and spring. Looking to purchase such from Pacific Tool. First are these generally drop in items, firing pin and spring and next are the following tools what's needed to change out such - Firing Pin Removal Tool and Mainspring Changing Tool as listed at Midway -Product #: 286410, Product #: 225312. Note I want the tools to do general cleaning and lubricating of the bolt at least once a year also.

Thanx,
Les

If you note the underside of your bolt, you'll see the "hook" of it that the sear releases when it's cocked. You can hook it on the edge of a wooden work bench and pull it back, then I usually hold it open by wedging a dime in between the body and striker. It's easier to see than explain and easier still on a 700 bolt than my 40x. Anyhow if you do this you will see a very small pin that you need to punch out. Once that's out, it's pretty self-explanatory to replace your firing pin or disassemble further. I would give it a try and decide whether or not you still think you need to buy the tools. Pacific's replacements are great, got mine shooting again.

Hi fngmike,

I saw this post and at first thought I didn't post anything about a 40X and then saw the date. Yes I have it down now and have the tools to work over the 40X bolt. My
40X's don't get much use now for I'm hot on the Turbo. Anyway thinks for the reply and welcome to the forum.
