40x action work

I see a lot of 40x actions on the ARA nationals equipments lists. Do these actions typically require truing or some other work to be competitive?

They do. Some are warped, some use a bushing, most all need a new barrel.

40X Standard

Almost all of the rimfire benchrest actions are basically built on the 40X action. That some are improvements cannot be denied but Remington designers have shown the way. The 40X and the Remington 700 series are brainchildren of Mike Walker when he worked for Remington.

Bill: Really? I must disagree. While there are a great many rifles built on the 40X or one of the clones I seriously doubt almost all have vertical lock up or that great big huge tenon at the far end of the 40X.

Let me name a FEW that are NOT based on the 40X. Hall, Turbo, Falcon, XIII, Swindlehurst, Anschutz 54, Remington 37,ULA.

I'm not knocking the 40X, I love mine. A pie chart showing popular bench rest rim fire actions would have a small slice dedicated to the 40X, not a big slice. Right now Turbo would probably be the biggest slice. It is based on the Winchester 52. bob

Hero`s

Mike Walker, Flash Ebert, and Karl Kenyon;Where would 22RF be with out all 3? Mike is the only one alive and he and his bride are in North Carolina,in their mid 90`s. Bill Shehane and Doyle Anglin had lunch with Mike about a year ago, wouldn`t that be a treat! We are so lucky to have had them involved with the progression of BR22RF.

Willy: How correct you are. Those three are at the pinnacle of rim fire accuracy. I'm sorry to report that I heard very recently that Mike had passed. I hope it is not true. Keep your ears open. bob

Mike Walker

Mike has passed lived about 20 miles from me. His guns and gun related things were for sale at a gunshow in Asheville N.C. last weekend, He was 101. Chief Tried to Call you Slick but your phone must be broke,I know you are not working because Chickens can make a living on their own, cold and rainy here in the Mtn's Do you think it would warm up the inside of the house if I opened and closed the doors about 25 times?

I don;t know all actions but

I assure you the turbo is based on the 40x and I believe the basis of the falcon is the 40x too....

Mr Remington ! What a list of accomplishments he gave us!

What part of the 40X is the Turbo related? It's certainly not the bolt and firing pin design, footprint is significantly different, trigger attachment is different, barrel tenon dimensions and design is different.
It's really hard for me to see any thing other than the cocking piece shape where it contacts the sear.

Flash Ebert

The way Flash did things was by trial and error and he did have a 40X version of the Turbo,he modified a 40X and it had a left port and Turbo was stamped on them ,I believe he built only 4 of this version. At one time Jim William `s had 2 of them and Fred Leeds ended up with one of them the other one went some where ? Flash eventually settle in on the WIN 52 version and that is where it is today. Flash also did the aluminum version, mainly in a sporter profile, seen a couple of them and they did not seem to be very popular , after he got it working he stayed with the 52 design.

Slick,
Speaking of Fred Leeds (aka cadillacjack), has anyone seen or heard of him lately? It has been since the first Livonia PSL that I saw him. I think he missed the ARA Nats that year due to blood sugar problems. I miss that ole guy.

Judge Leeds

James Pappas visits with Fred often, His sugar problem got worst and hopefully got it stabilized, he sold all his BR stuff thru James and KSS . Bass Fishing is now his passion!

Nothing new under the sun

When you think about it, every new innovation is built on ideas from others.

Why wouldn't someone who is smart not build on the good ideas of others?

Carp

Carp,

Spoke with Fred on Thursday, he fell and screwed up the hip he had a hip replacement years ago, it's pretty bad. He's going to have surgery, I believe this coming week, so please keep him in your prayers. He was in good spirits.

Regards,
Joe

Joe,
Will do that very thing. That isn't good for a hip replacement. Thank you for the info.
