40x 722 & 700 action, Receiver Filler piece ?? Inside action, left side. Receiver Filler piece & spring. #19 & 20. How does it work ? What is it for ? How do you check for correct operation ? I do not understand this item. CONFUSED !! Thanks in advance for your help

The filler piece is there to prevent a cartridge from falling behind the feed ramp. Without it there it can be a nuisance if a cartridge falls back there and you have to fish it out. If it's working correctly the spring lets it come out against the feed ramp when you open the bolt, and as you close the bolt the bolt nose pushes it back in to allow the bolt to pass by. Most of 'em I see are stuck in due to old oil/grime/dirt. etc. To see if it's working like it should, just open the bolt and push on the filler block and see if it pushes into the receiver and the spring returns it back to the outward position.
Hope this helps.

Thank you Kent, for the excellent information on function/test. One of mine was stuck and now it's fixed. Regards

yes, this does help. However, it puts too pressure on side of bolt, makes it more difficult to operate bolt than it should. Is the correct way to remove....remove ejector, then pry out Receiver filler piece?

If it's working correctly, it actually makes the bolt seem to work more smoothly. But, to answer your question, yes remove the feed ramp and pry it outward and it'll come out. Fixing it to where it works as it was designed would be better in my opinion.

On my 40x,the piece needs to be in place keeping pressure on the bolt.mine got broke and i tried shooting without it and the gun shot all over the place,so i put the broken piece back in to finish the match.I ordered five new springs and filler pieces . they were very cheap so i orderd 5 sets for future, and shiping was still the most cost. But I do believe that they are needed.

Bob,
I agree with you, it is needed for it to work as designed. If nothing else it guides the bolt nose to the same spot every time with the little side tension on the bolt front end. And, places the firing pin in the same place every time which couldn't hurt:)
I'd fix it so it worked rather than remove it, if I cared about accuracy, which I do.

Have to get it out to fix, plan on returning to action. Took it out and cleaned and replaced. Still applying too much pressure on bolt. It should not make bolt difficult to operate. !! ?? Took out ejector, still difficult to work. Works easy and smooth with Filler out. Will do it again, must have missed something. I understand why it is needed. Where is the best place to order replacements?

- Sometimes I take a 600 grit stone and polish the top and bottom of the piece where it fits into the recess in the action to give it room to work. On some of 'em there's a littel bump in the metal on top 'bout half way back that causes it to bind up. You might dress it a bit and see if it don't free it up.

Also polish the face that the bolt bears against and make sure the bolt in that area is real smooth and no burrs on the front edge of the bolt head.

I made a replacement filler piece from delrin and the spring from music wire for a rec I got that was missing some parts. Works good but you can still feel the drag on the bolt.

For those folks that ordered CMP 40X guns you will probably find that these two pieces are missing in action. I discovered this on the last run of 40X's.

Wonderful info. I also discovered 1/8"+ play [circular] [slack] between bolt head and bolt body. When putting bolt back in rifle, most of time, bolt hilts [out of position] ejector. Take bolt out, put bolt head in correct position, careful put bolt back in, making sure it lines uo with ejector. Have email CMP for quick fix?

With the bolt out of the rifle the only thing that lines up the bolt head is the firing pin. Once the bolt is in the rifle the ejector/loading ramp should keep the bolt head properly lined up as the bolt is cycled.

Yes, however, the bolt head must first slide into the ejector/loading ramp .

You might need to completely disassemble the bolt and make sure there is nothing causing the bolt head / bolt body joint to be stiff. I have a 40x that I have shot a lot and the bolt always goes into the rec without thinking about it. Maybe you could bevel the appropriate edges of the bolt face so it can't hang up on the ejector.

I looked at the bolt nose last night and there are substantial bevels that would ease the passage of the bolt past the sides of the ejector. This is on a PTG bolt so maybe your bolt doesn't have these bevels.

I did tweak the bolt head off to one side and when I inserted it into the rec it did stop against the ejector but with the slightest wiggle of the bolt knob the bolt went on in.
