Today was exactly as promised. Extraordinary, especially after the long winter!! When we arrived at the range the frost had just begun to lift, the lake was still covered with the last of its winter blanket of snow covered ice, and the winds were more calm than worrisome. The sun was out in all its glory under a cloudless sky, so everything seemed pretty much prefect. Made me wish I had scheduled the match to start at 9 rather than 10. I should probably think about changing that before our next two matches just in case Mother Nature decides to offer us a repeat.
Four of us came out to play on this gorgeous day, but as usual, shortly after getting our benches ready, the breezes started to show their true colors, just as had been promised. They had said that things would start out pretty much calm, then around 10 through the rest of the morning, as the temperature rose, so would the breezes. What had started out at a very manageable 3 to 6 MPH breeze soon became a 5 to 10 MPH wind. They had hit that nail right on the head with their forecast as that was exactly what they had predicted. Problem was, they had left off the part about how switchy things would get.
So, how did we do? For the first time all four of us were trying to qualify for the 20 ft/lb HV-B Class. Paul had also brought along his 12 ft/lb gun in hopes of qualifying with that only to find that even though he had put nearly 600 pellets through it yesterday without a problem, today it had once again decided to leak air, so it stayed in the truck. Maybe next time?
As I said earlier, these results are for the HV-B Class:
DAVID SHATTUCK ••• 242-10X • 243-10X • 238-4X = 723-24X • Theoben .177 cal. • on the first card, target #21, my thumb hit the trigger while waiting for a condition resulting in a 5 point drop.
DAN BROWN ••• 237-2X • 243-10X • 241-8X = 721-20X • FX Independence 22 cal. • using another new lube. Seems to be the norm rather than the exception.
PAUL BENDIX ••• 243-6X • 242-5X • 234-4X = 719-15X • Theoben .20 cal. • Paul changed pellets after the second target. BIG mistake!
DANIEL FINNY ••• 219-2X • 216-2X • 225-0X = 660-4X • Benjamin Maurada .22 cal.
By the time we were finished the mercury had climbed high enough to take away that last remaining bit of ice from the lake, so it really did seem like Spring was finally here.
Your next opportunity to Qualify at Pinnacle will be in 2 weeks on April 23rd. All we can do until then is to pray for a day exactly like this one, but don’t hold your breath as that is very doubtful, especially at Pinnacle Mountain.
Hope you can make our next match.
