"30X47" HBR round....

Readingthe last few months match reports from NBRSA News I see that the 30X47 is often listed. I'm guessing that many of these "30X47's" are shortened .308's or has the new 6.5X47 case taken over this quickly?

Al,

The guys I talk to over here in Wenatchee seem to view the 6.5x47L as manna from heaven... small primer pocket Lapua brass without all the case forming hassle previously associated.

Al, the original 30x47HBR was Guy Chism's version of the .30HBR - the latter, dreamed up by Dan Jarvis and Larry Smart, based upon the .308, the former based upon the .300 Savage. Guy always told me that, once he decided to use even less capacity, he went to using the .300 Sav. brass because he was, "too lazy to do all of that trimming", which, the .308 case mandated !;) The "new" 6.5x47 LAPUA is simply a "ready-made" version of the HBR case - albeit, with a somewhat shorter neck length - the head-space and shoulder angles are very nearly identical. There were earlier 30x47s, which were simply shortened .308s, etc. - there's an almost countless variety of 30x47s!;) During the annual NBRSA Hunter Nationals, the 30x47 HBR has probably been the most used configuration for about two decades. Al:

The 6.5/47 Lapua case has, as so many have mentioned, a small primer. Opinions split on this. In any chambering, some say that the case doesn't work well until the flash holes are drilled to about .080. Other say they are fine as is, thank you ver much. I *think* the "fine" come mainly from the West Coast, the "drill" from the Midwest & East Coast, but that is an impression, not a real survey.

So Many Variations....

My 30HBR or 30X47HBR or 30X47...uses a reamer originally from Speedy and then sold to Frank Wilson. I use Remington 300 Sav brass which is easily formed in a custom Redding "S" type die and then turned for my .332 neck. I lasts a long time and does not grow in length.
I tried the Laupua 6.5X47 brass, but it was to tight for my chamber and was a lot more work. I did turn a couple of thousands off the web of the Laupua brass to get them to fit and after fire forming, shot them against the Rem 300 Sav brass with the same load. No difference in several group tries...they shot the same. Soooo...for ease of effort, I'll stick to the 300 Sav brass.;)

I bought one last year - - -

The chamber length is exactly the same as the Win. 300 Savage brass I have. It's shoulder has been pushed back a bit to form a neck longer then the 300 Savage has.

I went for a 30-44 several years ago instead of the 30-47. I figured the reduced capacity was beneficial. From what I have seen in the 9+ years I have been shooting, the Minimum capacity chamberings will do everything the 30-47 will do using less powder and having less boom. I made up 180 of the new Lapua small primer cases and have opened up the flash holes to .071, I think it is. I think they perform better with a bit more fire.

From a purely economic standpoint, one can't beat just expanding the 6.5-47 cases to 30 and use it as is. One can buy a 6.5-47 die off the shelf, have the neck reamed out to a 30 and be on one's way. Custom dies are a pain and expensive. Eventually one needs to full length re-size.The extrey few grains of powder are probably a good tradeoff. It might be interesting to see how a no turn chambering for the expanded case would work.

Which case has the least capacity and still makes Hunter Class

Most of the various "30x44" offerings and the .30/30 and it's variants (.30 American; Aardvark, etc.) fill this niche. As someone stated above, especially with the lighter thirty caliber bullet weights, there isn't much to gain over a 44 MM long case (roughly 1.75" long) case: the .308x1.75 is an excellent cartridge. HOwever, if you're already set-up with a 47MM cartridge, the 44 MM offerings aren't exactly magic. RG
