308w neck ?

First sorry but new to this forum, but have relaoded or about 43 years... Next door is a sod farm with over 2000 acres and got to set up a 800 and 1200 yard targets. My 22PPC and AR-223s are just not the best or that far. So found a old but is mint shape Rem 40-X in 308w The heavy bbl says... Phil Jones 308 WIN 336 ND.
1- Is this a tight neck and or does it need special dies. Have some Reddings full size dies and Fed gold match brass for my 308 hunting rifle...will any of that work in it?. Also Have many different bullets, BR primer and new Lapua brass. Thought I may even have to true and thin-en the neck walls ??? any and all help - THANKS

In a short answer maybe. If you subtact .308 from .336 you get .028. Divide that by 2 and you get .014. What all than means is that if the wall thickness of the brass you are using is .012 or less than you have plenty of clearance. If it is .014 or more it would require some turning.

You will have to turn necks on Lapua brass for a .336 neck. I had mine made with a .339 neck so I could just clean up the necks and have .003 clearance. Most .308 reamers are .342-344 neck and don't require turning.

Did you measure the brass you are going to use? If the brass has a neck thickness of .012 that will give you .004 clearence, if it is .013 than .002 clearence. If the brass is .014 or thicker then you will need to turn the necks. A neck turning tool such as PMA will do the job. But make sure you measure you brass first, turning brass, although not difficult, is also not a lot of fun for a lot of people. As a after thought. If the idea of turning brass and the cost of buying the turning tool, turning mandrel and expander mandrel bothers you, you could have a gunsmith open up the neck on the rifle, and maybe for less than the cost of the tools you need to buy.

Get the K & M brand neck turner with a carbide mandrel...it is the best for the price..IMO...sold by Precision Reloading..
Redding reloading dies...get the full length sizer with the interchangable bushings for load tuning...seater is optional...I prefer Wilson straight line seater...
