Hello,
I am new here I am debating between leaving my action as is or opening it up to wsm, I would like to shoot cheap, since I need practice and thought about casting lead bullets, or turning copper on a lathe?.
I have heard good things about rl-17 on 6mmbr, I hear the 300wsm is more accurate then the 308, how reliable is the 308 at 1000 yards?
also can you drop some 308 and 300 wsm loads on me please?
and has anyone tried the .308 cal. cast bullets with a gas check?
if so what kind of velocities are you getting?
if I cast I think I would eventually make my own cast mold so I can get some good BC. but can a gas check be used on a boat tail lead round? in any case can a gas checked lead bullet get pushed to 2800fps area?
any one have any cast recipies?

Ok I know this is alot and sure some if not all of it will be laughed at..lol..
But any help is GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all

Never seen a CAST BT bullet.........

But, I think if you look at a BT bullet, then imagine the problems a gas check on such an arrangement would pose, with such a soft platform, you'd have a different idea. You might ask about how to use the "search function" here. As far as "high BC" w/cast bullets, you may as well forget that; Yes you can get 27-2800 from a cast bullet, but it involves more work than you've done so far. The point I'm trying to make here is, for the questions you ask, you'll need an experienced mentor, AND a few years of casting and shooting, PLUS experience so that you can accurately duplicate alloys, AND a good quality barrel thats chambered/throated for cast bullets. You might start by going to some estate sales, check ebay, & get the 1956 edition of "The Handbook of Cast Bullets" by Lyman. That book when/if you find it should be read from C to C, as there is not only a great deal of good info, but you may just change your mind about cast bullets. If you look at some of the cast bullet websites, I think there is a cast bullet association; these may be alternatives that would help you better than the type of shooting done here. ;) Good Luck

You didn't say what your rifle is now so you may be limited by other issues (ie bolt face etc,,) but why not look into 222, 223 or something 22 cal,,,,,, cheap bullets(match bullets for under $250/1000),, cheap brass for 223 is still around,,,, little powder charge's compared to 308 or 300WSM,,,,,,,,,,, just a thought,,,

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

ok I went ahead and had em open it up, it is now a wsm bolt it is a remmy 700, I am going to true it bed it and chamber a barrel blank doing all the work on my lathe " im a machinist" but I did not want to tackle opening a face as ive not done it before but after seeing the quality I may just grab some bar stock and turn a new bolt for it?, I have casted just not for rifle bullets, so I have a little exp... I am a distributor here in omaha for lee, so I get great discounts on their products, I also distribute Nikon and am waiting for my 4-16 monarch mil-dot to come in, I am having B&C send me a medalist varminter that I am going to pillar bed, oh the action is a long action being that I want to seat the bullets out farther but sill allow it to be fed by my 10round conversion which is only 7 in wsm but I plan to fab something that will hold 15,..
Thank you for the advice I will try to get a good casting book specific to rifle rounds, any help is appreciated..

Thank you all very much

Cast bullets

I purchased a supply of Meister hard cast 30 cal 180 gr? bullets from Midway. A dime ($0.10) apiece, lubed. Looking at Meister web site they also supply attached gas checks for an additional amount. I read their web site on casting bullets and what they go through to control temprature & the mix to achieve "hard cast" bullets made me think I would rather purchase the projectiles.
You might want to reconsider.... unless you are planning to go into the business.... Good luck.

I also understand if there is ANY copper residue in he barrel, the lead bullet passing over it really grabs & spalds lead off the slug.

I am not very knowlegable on shooting cast projectiles.
