Have a .308 custom target rifle - 1-15 twist and want to shoot 150 grain bullets, have a 36x scope and will shoot 200yards most of the time. Have had some luck with re-15 48 grains and 48.5 grains and get 4 bullets in one hole at 100 yards and the one a little off. Any one shooting with a 1-15 twist and having a better luck with some other powder. Started lower and worked up. Have a lot of RE-15. Have other powders. With other rifles have changed powders and improved the groups. We shoot 50 rounds matches at 200 yards and have had luck with a 204,.222,6mmppc. the 204 I use RE-15. the .222 I use AA2230. the 6mmppc used n133 & 8208 but about out of those powders I use some Berger Bullets and others. Would like some help. Thanks

Craig,

I shoot a 15 twist in Palma with 2155 (155gr) SMK's and a load of Varget that isn't supposed to fit in a 308 and get good results. I've tried 150 gr (Jef) Fowler flat base bullets in it, also with Varget and they just drill at 100 yds, the only distance I've fired them at. Very unexpectedly, my 15 will shoot 175 SMK's just fine, X-ring at 1K. I don't know anyone besides you and me who shoots a 15 twist 308. 125 gr Nosler Ballistic tips work very well for me also. What kind of 150's are you shooting now? Many folks get great results with RL 15. Since you have so much of it maybe trying a different bullet will be productive.

I don't understand your question. You can shoot four bullets into one hole and have one a "little" off. We should be asking you for help!

Greg.
Have been use Fowler's 150 grain fb, but they hav now quit making them, use
sierra 150 match kings and a few others. Don't have Varget. Thanks for the come back. craig

What powder are you using with the 125 grains, Would like to know the amounts of powder if you can. I have used Berger bullets with a number of my other target rifles and have worked out very good. If I get close with try some of the Bergers. Have used 50 grains of 748 with 130 grain bullets, but would like to shoot 150 grains if possible. craig

Heres what i use in my 14 twist if it will help .
43.5 gr h4895 with a 150 sierra. I used it in a 12 twist also.
Both rifle shoot small at 200 with this load.
The rifles have a 340 nk. I use federal match brass turned to just clean up at.015. I also use a fed 210 match primer.
Velocity was in the 2750 range.

Craig,

The 308 Win is one of a few cartridges that are really hard to make misbehave. It is medium in every respect, bore size, case capacity, expansion ratio, designed pressure limits. Accordingly, medium powders, of which there are very many, work very well. I like Varget for my match loads but 748 (which you have) is a great powder for 308 Win of any bullet weight. Winchester uses it in their version of 168 and 175 gr SMK match ammo. It works very well behind 125 and 130 gr bullets and it meters very accurately (Varget does not, needs to be weighed for best accuracy and charged through a drop tube to fit enough for top velocity with light bullets). 4320 is a very good choice for light bullet 308 loads and meters pretty well. It works well with all bullet weights but doesn't produce top velocity with the heavier bullets. I think 748 would be my choice for a single do everything powder in 308 Win, especially if I was using a progressive loader for volume production. Federal uses 4064 in their GM Match 308 ammo with 168 and 175 SMK's.

Greg

PS. Charles Wooten won all 10 factory class matches for group at Hawks Ridge a few years back with a 40X, sorted 155gr Bergers jammed, Winchester cases skim neck turned, 210M primers and a huge load of RL 15.

An EXCELLENT SOURCE of "308 Help" is right here: http://www.6mmbr.com/308Win.html. Enjoy! :)

.308

Thanks for the help! What I want to do is get groups at 200 yards under 3/4" I appreciate the information. Good shooting from Florida

Varget

In a "Real Egg Shoot" I broke two eggs a 400 meters with a .308 using Varget.

No sighters allowed and the back ground was painted black.

Yes, I won the money.

.308 = Varget, but so does another six different other powders.

Wait a minute you're already shooting 4 into one hole and the other is a little off at 200 yards!

Oh well we both got to brag a little;-)=

Try Accurate 2520

My gun is set up differently from yours, but it shoots well. I have found the following combination of components very accurate:

Rifle:
Remington 700 SPS Tactical, 0.003" Headspace, 20" Bull barrel, 1:12 Twist, Jard 12 oz trigger, HS Precision Stock, Full Aluminum Bedding, Blueprinted Action, Lapped Bore, Springfield 14X 30mm Scope, Leuopld one piece Steel base and high rings torqued 30 in/lbs.

Ammo:
Winchester Brass, Weight Sorted, turned necks, max trim, neck sized
CCI BR-2 Benchrest Primers
43.5 gr. Accurate 2520 Powder (Meters Very Well, But Weigh Anyways)
168 gr. SMK
Ogive is -0.018" off rifling

The above combination of variables produces 5 shot 1 hole groups at 100, 5 shot .5 inch groups at 200, 1.0 inch groups at 300, 2.25" groups at 400, 4.0" at 500, and 5" at 600.

Its not championship shooting, but its acceptable accuracy and hopefully maybe you can take something from my post and apply to your own setup to help reach your desired accuracy level, mainly trying the Accurate 2520. Its very similar to Varget and is almost identical as far as burn rate but meters much better.

Was not on here to brag by anymeans as anyone could pick up my rifle and reproduce the same results, its no reflection of personal skill, just an unbiased review of some variables I have found to work well. There are many far better shooters on here than me, probably you, but I hope I've helped out atleast a little.
Matt
