I was shooting 175 smks out of a 27" 1-11 rock tube and getting 2730. Now I'm up to a 31" 1-12" broughton shooting 155.5 bergers quite a bit faster than that!
Depending on powder used you could go as short as 20", but you see that more in benchrest and Tacticool rifles. For F-class I would go with at least 24", and 30" seems to be a lot more popular. Depends on how fast or slow your powder is.
I'm curious about about what muzzle velocities have been measured with factory loads from a 30" W308 barrel and how they differ from manufacturers numbers. Anybody got numbers for Federal GMM 175 SMK or Black Hill? They've gotta be better than the advertised numbers from both because of the barrel length.
