I am looking for an accurate hunting load for mine and a friends .308. I know that there are balanced loads that tend to work well in a number of rifles. I am looking for that in a 150gr. Ballistic Tip/Sierra load......if it exists My limited experience with the .308 indicates that sometimes the 150gr. bullets don't give the best accuracy. I would prefer to stay away from ball powders (although I have had good luck with WW 748).
 
Several of my 308s shot the 150 gr. better then anything else. 3031, 4064 and 748 all gave good accuracy. Varget usely shoots well for me over a broad range of loads and is pretty tolerant of temperature changes. Important for a hunting rifle. The loading manuels usely show more powders for the 308 then other calibers and all shoot good. Try what ever you have on hand that is listed in a manuel and you may be surprised.

You might want to try the Sierra 150 gr Pro Hunter. This has been an amazingly accurate bullet in every 30 caliber rifle I have tried it in. Some bullets just seem to work, and this is one of them.
 
I've got 2) diff 308's I load for, both shot 150gr Sierra's and 150 gr Speer's ok ,,,BUT,,, they both shot 165 gr Sierra GameKings HPBT # 2140 like a house on fire!!, I use Hodgdon H4895 over a Federal 210 primer in Lapua brass,
 
If you are wanting an accurate hunting load with the Sierra HUNTING bullet do try the H4895. It is extreme powder so not sensitive to the elements. the 150gr bullet will shoot well with that powder.

I'll second D.Dumas' comment in regards to groups with the Sierra 165gr HPBT's in a 1/2 dozen 308/7.62 NATO & 30-'06 chamberings to include gas/piston & bolt guns.
 
hunting load

in my 308 i use a 168 nosler. I have hade really good luck with 168's. The 150 are to light if you are shooting at any distance...and probly wont have enough energy down range.

46 gr varget 155 berger vld's shot 1.5" group last week with moderate wind at 300 yards in my 308. 3 of the 5 rounds were touching. zero at 300 was 16 clicks up on a 1/8 scope, from 1.5" high at 100.

best i ever shot was a 5 shot .238moa, using 42grains varget with a 150grain sierra flat base spitzer , oal 2.800"
i've come close to thi group but never better.
its a 1962 rem 700 .243 converted to a 21" hart barrel .308 with jewell trigger, boyd's varmit stock, S&B 3-12x50 a9 scope.
 
748 is what I use.......

start off at 46.0g and work your way up. Some rifles will take 49g but everyone is different. Speed and accuracy is great!
 
My 308 likes the 165 grain nosler i havent had very good luck with the 150gr. varaget powder semis to work the best for me.
 
150s?

Hi,

I think its a case of trying a few loads in your rifle but I have found 150gn NBTs and re15 to be an extremely accurate combination. I found no issue with its lethality dropping several deer up to about 170lb. I always rate the Nosler bullets, havent had one let me down yet.
 
308 hunting loads..

If you are going to shoot whitetals, mule deer, antelope, black bear I would recomend the 150 grain Scirocco, WW758, Reloader, 15, Varget, H4895 will serve your needs. Mine will shoots sub .5moa and has worked flawlessly.

308 load

i have found the 308 as one of the most forgiving of all calibers to reload for after the .222. i would start with I-4064. LAPUA BRASS and a 210m primer. but the ones i loaded for shot virtually everything i tried good.varget 3031; and h-4895 and I-4895. roninflag

benchmark

With bullets that light Benchmark powder should be considered. Lyman lists 44.0 Gr. as a max charge with the best results.
