If a barrel (came off a Sendero 300wm) is a 300wm, can I put it on a long action in 30-06? I know it will have to be headspaced by a competent gunsmith, just checking to make sure I can have it put on another 700 aciton without major modifications.

thanks much again - Jim

Jim- The diameter on the base of the 300 Win Mag is .5319 at the base and your 30-06 is .4709. You would have to complete remove the old chamber. The two actions should be the same length, only the bolt face would change between the two if I'm not mistaken.

Jim...the Remington action for the 30-06 will not work with a .300 Win Mag barrel...the bolt face diameter is different...the action rails are too narrow to feed the magnum shell from the magaxine box reliably...the barrel headspace will probably need to be changed...I would sell the 30-06 action and start with a real magnum action...

Measure the length of your chamber from the end of the barrel to the start of the shoulder. All that would have to be cut off and then the threads would start at the end of the shoulder area. You'll then need about .950 in length from there if you use a 1/4" lug. More than likely after you cut off the WSM chamber, add .950 for the barrel thread, you won't have enough diameter to cut a shoulder in front of the barrel thread that would have much diameter for the shoulder to butt up against the recoil lug. I like at least a minimum of .100" larger than the barrel tenon diameter for the shoulder, that would get you .050" per side of tenon shoulder diameter.
