I would like to know where the best place to start as to not waste a lot of bullets because the 300 is a new experience to shoot for me i primarily shoot the 6mms so this is definitly going to be different for the difference in recoil and all and what is the best powders aside from H4350 we know its potential.
thanks stan

Stan

Always start into the lands, that way you Only have one way to go! H-4350 is a great powder. Oh and don't be afraid to move back of the lands.

Stan,

Like Joe says, just put them into the lands .005 to .010". And H4350 is the best powder to use. Depending on the brass that you are using, start around 60 to 61 grains.

And yes it's going to recoil more than the BB guns.

Good Luck,
Danny

Hey big guy congrats again on your succesful year thanks for the much needed info this is not going to be my primary rifle just a backup if things get nasty or if you show up that bb gun might not get the job done win your around Ha Ha thanks again .

Stan,

Thank you and I should congratulate you on a very good year in competion also. You and the rest of the WVA guys have done some very fine shooting this year.
The 300 WSM is a very competitive cartridge for long range benchrest. I was shooting my late wife's LG this year and I will be adding her 300 WSM HG to the mix for the coming year. So maybe she can help me out in HG in 2009.

You and the rest of the WVa crew have a Merry Christmas this year and make sure that nobody over there tries to poach any of the reindeer pulling the sleigh. My grandchildren might get upset.:D

I shoot a 34" barrel in my wsm...65.0 grs of n 165 and a berger 210 just touching the lands if not a .001 or 2 off....have noticed groups open up when i go further in....chris

Chris,

I am curious as to what speed you are getting out of that load with the
N165. I use less than that in my 7mm Rem Mag with an 180 VLD.

Danny

Danny, I'm getting mid 2800's but that is with a shooting chrony and you know how that goes.....accuracy is excellent at 1k shoots better than
i can..shot my 1st screamer 10 shot group this year and this is with 3 years on this barrel with no set back....chris

Chris,

The speed is probably a little faster, though my last test between a chrony and an Oehler were pretty close.

I can believe that about the barrel, as I am waiting on the first new barrel for my 300 WSM HG since it was built in 2001. The barrel has over 4500 rounds and the seating depth has not changed 2002. That was about .015 into the lands.

Danny

Danny, holy cow...4500rds I thought i was pushing it with my current barrel life...I guess i acomplished what i was looking for..accurate round with good life!!! I WILL say that the 300wsm is as easy as a 308win to get a good load for! chris

Danny i must add that I have only taken this thing out to my local range ONCE to do l oad work up..so my speeds may be a tad off.....the chrony works only depending on the sunlight....load work up went soooo smoothe i saw no need to test any futher except at a 1k match plus or minuns a grain but settled on 65 of n 165 chris

If it works, stay with it. I am looking forward to testing the new barrel. The barrel on my LG, from Clay Spencer proved to me at the Nat'ls that Clay's barrels will shoot and I am keeping track of every round put through it.

The other was a Hart, that Michelle Sutton sent me in 2001. My wife wanted to shoot the Nationals that year and I only had one HG. I didn't want to have to carry the thing up and down the stairs six times, so I had a lighter gun built and I want to try 300 WSM anyway. Everyone who has shot the gun, won relay & matches with it. I stopped keeping track of the rounds somewhere around 2000, several years ago.
Now we will see if it is the case that makes it last that long or was it a super barrel.

Danny
