300 winm vs 300 wsm

i have looked at these two and was wondering if some of you that have competed with them would post your opinions on the plus and minus for the two.
can the same bullet weight be used in each, reasonable bbl length?

i see a small savings on powder with similar results in each from the wsm, does this show up in the real world?

yes for 1000yd competition, with occassional shorter matchs

thanks

The WSM is working very well for a number of shooters. 190-210 gr. bullets seem to be what works best.
Works in a sorter action and no belts to deal with, both pluses.

Mike,

By 300 WM, do you mean Winchester or Weatherby? With the Weatherby, you can shoot 240's very well, where with the 300 Win & 300 WSM, you can not get decent velocity.

Like Jay said, the 190-210 weights are working very well.

I'm in the process of putting together a 300 WSM for 1000 yard shooting. I've heard good things about this caliber for long range shooting. Danny has been giving me some pointers and advice that has helped me decided on this caliber over the .308. He has been a big help.

Good luck.

If a long throated reamer and a single shot receiver are used, the 300 WSM comes mighty close to duplicating the 300 Win mag. But only then.

If you're loading to clear a magazine box, the 300 WSM can't touch the 300 win mag in hand loaded ammo. In factory ammo, it actually does because they load the 300 win down to glorified 30-06 velocities for some reason.

Belts make no difference in handloading. Set your dies up just like you would for any other precision shooting caliber and you'll never even know it's there. Only the gunsmith needs to worry about belts when he chambers.

If both calibers are set up correctly for long bullets, the 210 is about perfect ballistically.

gg,
what kind of bbl length and what kind of velocity.

is recvr strength an issue...as in a long throated repeater is ok if fed single ?
thanks

If you want a hunting weight, a 26" barrel will launch a 210 at 2800 to 2900 fps in a 300 win mag. If you're building a bench gun, a 30" barrel will take them another 100 fps or so faster.

The 300 wsm is just slightly slower (50 fps) if the bullet isn't taking up all the case capacity.

A ton of 300 WSM's have been built with repeater actions and seem to work fine. But a single shot would still be my choice for bench work. The most important thing is getting that throat out aways so the bullet can come out and powder can get in.

In a 300 win mag, a great load is 75.5 to 77.0 grains of H1000 with the 210 Berger jammed into the lands about .005" with a Fed 215 primer or Rem 9.5's.

300 wsm

I have been shooting the factory Winchester 150 grainers, they do a number on deer. But I really want to do some hand loading and see what this rig will do, i hear the 165's and 180's are better, anybody have a load that i could start with<

Based on advice I've gotten from a member here I will be loading the 210 Berger VLD's with 62-65 grains of H4350. You may give that a try and see how it works for you.

300 wsm

My main use for the gun is deer hunting, I currently have places in clear cut timber that I could easily shoot 400 to 500 yrds. I am comfortable with the factory ammo out to 200 yards, but dont know after that. I would like to stay with the 165's, 180's at the most.

Thanks :)

For the 300 Win Mag, I'm using a 190 Sierra MK, Winchester brass, Fed 215 primer, 68.5 grains of IMR4350, COAL is max SAAMI length with velocity of 2960. This is out of an Obermeyer 26inch 1-11 twist 5R barrel on a Mcmillan built M40A1. I use the same recipe for the 185 Laupa Scenar Silver bullet.
This load often gives me .75 inch groups at 300 yards if I do my part. However, I'm not a good group shooter and usually I get groups of 1.3 inches at 300 yards.

I don't have any experience with the 300 short mag, but I have heard it does great with a 168/175 grain bullet at 1000 yards.
