Just bought a bench gun from an older gentleman who can not shoot anymore . It is a 300 Win Mag. There is a mark on the barrel .332 ,I think it is the neck dimension. Never having a gun that required neck turning before my question is what should the loaded case with the bullet seated measure at the neck? What is the correct way to prepare the case to make the dimension I need. Thanks
OK, I'm with you, it's most likely neck diameter.
this one's actually perty easy..... prepare to sacrifice some cases to The Brass Gods , deal with it.
getcherself a neck turner......read the d'rections.
Now, load up a case right out of the box and insert it into the chamber, it should just jam up, not even start into the neck.
turn off a thou or two.....
try it again.
Kinda' sneak up on the thing until you get the round to chamber.
Now go fire it. There is nothing to worry about, you can't screw it up. If it chambers cleanly you're Golden. Now measure the neck of your fired round, try a bullet in it and see does it go in. If you snuck up correctly it should be TIGHT, like you can't seat the bullet by hand.
Some guidelines to use in assessing your situation;
-generally the brass of the neck "springs back" about a thou so your actual neck diameter is about one thousandth larger than the fired case.
-generally .002 or .003 total clearance is hoovis, I too advocate measuring over the bullet. Math sucks and leads to errors. Disregarding the fact that actual measuring under a half thou is much trickier than most realize. Measure over the bullet and work in nice fat thousandths.
Ask lots of questions, you will generally get actual shooters' answers here. But good communication is hard, ask for clarification when reqd.
The only dumb question is the one you didn't ask.
