300 rum loads

Since you didn't state barrel length I'll assume a 26" barrel (most factory barrels) and that you want high velocity but safe loads. Why buy a Rum to shoot whimpy loads?
Per Quickload simulations (which I use a lot and trust):

Hodgdon Retumbo
Ramshot "Big Boy" and
IMR7828

will give velocities with non-moly 168 Sierra MatchKings between 3260 and 3272 fps with case fills between 96% and 100% at about 90% of SAAMI max pressure for a 26 " barrel. Get good earplugs as the muzzle pressure is around 18,000 psi for a 26".

IMR-7828 is my choice for 300 RUMS with bullets from 155 to 220 grain. I have a factory 26"x 10" Sendero, a 30"x 13" ~10 lb Krieger "medium palma" barreled 700 (with brake) and a 30"x 9" straight taper16 lb Hart barreled 700. All are shot prone from bipods.

The 30x13 pushes 155 Lapua Scenars comfortably at 3500 fps. It shoots flat and hard with good accuracy to 1000+ yards. Of my RUMS it's my favorite. It stilll has enough recoil and blast that practice sessions are ten shots or less.

The 30x9 will shoot 220 gn Lost River J40 solids to over 2 kilometers supersonic. That's specifically why I built it though accuracy behond a mile isn't spectacular. Judging wind deflection is insane at that distance even with high BC bullets. Though stable, bullets of that length and spin rate still preccess in large loops. The biggest problem is the inability to spot hits, even dust puffs, at over a mile. I shoot 210 Bergers in it at a mile or less with much better accuracy. At that weight and with no brake shooting it is pleasant with good hearing protectors.

I've only shot the Sendero a few shots. At 9 pounds and no brake it's not fun for recoil or blast. I keep it for friends who want to know what a RUM feels like to shoot. I already know.

I have a 30" shilen 12 twist, 1.25 straight contour. I like how the 168 smk bullet performs in my 12 twist .308 win. So, I hope a good starting point.

I've had the best results in my 7mm stw, with 7828, so I'll start there also.

Thanks

Ben
