300 Remington Ultra Mag Brass

I'm getting ready for a fall Alaska brown bear hunt, my bear rifle is a 300 RUM using a 190 or 210 gr berger VLD. My problem whenever using the RUM is finding quality brass to load.

Nosler seems to be the only choice other than Remington. Remington's UM brass is junk. It's really some of the worst quality brass I've ever come across.

Any recommendations on where to find the Nosler brass (in stock) would be appreciated.

Sorry about that. If they sold out, I wonder why they didn't order another run. You might want to click on the "contact us" link near the bottom left of the home page. It gives a phone #, and you could ask if another run is expected in anytime soon.

That Federal brass sold out years ago. It was gone so fast that most people never even heard about it.

The Nosler brass is better quality but it is just as soft and it holds less powder than Remington brass.

RIght now, it's hard to find either brand on store shelves. A few bags have trickled in now and then but not much.

Good luck.

Hunting Brown Bear

Rich:

Berger VLD bullets would not be my choice for Brown Bear.

I would use a control expansion bullet, IE: Swift A Frame, Nosler Partition, Barnes XXX or MX.

It is your back side that gets eaten up.

I have hunted bears with the bullets you mentioned and more, the VLD did a great job on a 680 lb bear last year (490 yrd shot) in fact he dropped in his tracks. The shot wasn't a heart shot either, it was through the shoulder.

Because of the BC, Berger VLD's are becoming very popular for big game hunting. The 220 gr VLD is a massive bullet.
I'm headed to Canada in May for world record black bear hunting, with a bow and arrow. I've seen a 500 lb black bear go 15 yards with a clean pass through 125 gr arrow.

I try to get 8-10 hunting trips in a year (not including duck hunting), two of those are bear hunts. I see the VLD used in about 20% of the rifle cartridges for bears.

If i cxan't find the right brass, I will just use some Nosler custom ammuniton that comes with a 200 grain nolser partition.
