.300 Dakota Rifling Suggestion

I am interested in building a .300 Dakota for 1000 yd BR. What rifling twist would be recommended for bullets in the 190 - 220 gr weight range? I think that a 1:10 should work fine; but was wondering if anything faster might be a better choice. So far, I don't have any experience with the big 30s for 1K shooting.

Thanks,

A 10-twist will be fine. I shot a close relative to the .300 Dakota -- a .404 Jeffrey case shortened to 2.50, but with a 28-degree shoulder (also know as a 30-SHV from Dave Tooley). A 10-twist would stabilize 240 grain SMKs.

You might want to rethink the case though. RWS is no longer making .404 Jeffrey brass; all that is left is the Norma. It's OK, but not up to RWS quality. The other sources, which I believe includes preformed .300 Dakota cases, has by in large been junk as far as benchrest quality is concerned.

The 1000 Yard shooters that I know that are shooting 300 Dakotas are using 330 Dakota brass. It is made by Norma. Some blow the shoulder forward to fit 300 Dak chambers, some shorten the chamber to 330 Dak dimensions.

What Powders

What Powders are you guys burning in the Dakota Case with the 210-240 grain bullets? What velocity? How Much?

Thanks
