30 Grendel help...

on the throat length. I'm going to have a 30 Grendel ground and was wondering what throat length most people are using. I'll be shooting 112 and 118 Cheeks or Knight bullets and of course a tight neck. Thanks for the help. James

James,

Following Jackie's and Randy Robinett's advice, I went with a 0 freebore on my .30 Walker (can't use the term Grendel as it is protected) and it's working out perfectly for shooting the 112 BIB. BTW, the 112 BIB is a fabulous bullet in the cartridge... ;)

I am easily getting 3000 fps with either N130 or H4198, but both like to run right at 2950.

I would use a zero freebore, 1-1/2 degree lead and a .330 neck, but most cases will clean up for a .332 neck. I use powders that are a little faster than the n130 and h4198 personally, with 7 ogive bullets in the 112-115 grain range. I have had better luck with a tad heavier bullets(118-125gr) with the powders that walker mentioned but YMMV some. I've done enough of them now to have a pretty good handle on what works for me but I still play with different loads. It's very easy to load and tune for, and shoots just about anything I throw at it pretty well. Just be careful when loading with the really fast powders that mine seem to love. I think you're gonna like it!
Walker is right about the Grendel name. Can't call it a Grendel. I call mine a
30 Major. Pacific tool has my reamer print on file. If you decide to go my route, just call him and ask for my 30 Major "match" profile----Mike Ezell

Walker and Mike

Thanks for all the information, you gentlemen sure were helpful.
Mike, that's probably what I will do concerning the reamer as it sounds like you have it nailed down pretty good. Walker, I've heard how good the BIB's shoot, I'll give them a try and thanks again. Good shooting, James

Is the "Grendel" copyrighted? So a wildcat using the case cannot be called a XXX Grendel? Who exactly cannot use the name? Me as an individual or the reamer grinder??

I thought all company names were copyrighted and yet we call our wildcats by them.

Ray, The name Grendel is trademaked, not copyrighted. A trademark protects a word, name or phrase and a copyright generally appllies to a literary work. When I started playing with this round I spent hours on the phone with Bill Alexander, the owner of Alexander Arms and the Grendel trademark. He was very helpful and willing to work with me in just about any way that he could be. The thing is, he is a big advocate of the marketing power of a "name". He also understands that a patent is virtually useless when it comes to a cartridge design. He said I could do whatever I wanted with his cartridge but was animate that I did not use the Grendel name. I'm not sure of the agreement that the reamer makers have entered into with Alexander but would think that legally they could grind a reamer to his specs if you call it something else and not "grendel". This would obviously circumvent whatever agreement that they have and likely won't happen. Technically, no one can use the term Grendel as it applies to a firearm or ammo except when referring to his 6.5 Grendel. Ultimately, I think it would be up to him and his lawyers as to whether he would pursue a given individual or entity for trademark infringement. He could be due at least his royalties. This is the way I understand it. Do we have any patent lawyers on here? Just call it a 30 Major and I won't be upset at all and neither will you.:D. I'm thinking of changing the name of mine to "SHOOTIN' S.O.B."!---Mike Ezell

Well you know if you ordered a 30PPC +.075 at shoulder with a .330 neck you might get the same thing but you don't have to say the word Grendel. OOps I said it!!

By the way there is no way this thing will be as good as the 257TEDNE+P+. Although the 30 cal seems to be able to get 3000 fps from bullets about 5 to 10 grains heavier than the 257 version. Which I suppose is do to the greater efficiency of the larger bore volume.

I am going to do some more messing with 6.8SPC wild cats in the near future. The Remington brass isn't as bad as i thought but its not as good as i would like.

Well I didn't mean to bring this thread to a screaching halt.

On the 257TED (25PPC +.075 .285neck) I have .060 free bore which works well for the 88 BIB and 100 Sierra. but is a bit long for the 75 VMAX. Although the 88 BIB could probably live with as little as .020 free bore.

I will probably have the reamer modified to .040 free bore.
When I order my 6.25HECK reamer I will probably request a .030 free bore on that one since it is my plan to focus that cartridge on AR's after initial testing in turnbolts and the shorter lenght of magazine lenght cartridge's usually works better with a shorter free bore.

PS you guys are going to a lot of trouble to reinvent the 7.62 x 39 soviet.

If I thought a 7.62x39 would be better for score shooting , I'd shoot one. I'd shoot anything that I think gives me an edge. So, what's your point ?

The 7.62 x 39 is the parent to the 220 russian case that is the parent to the PPC that is the parent to the 6.5 Grendel that is the parent to the 30 Major that is almost the same as the 7.62 x 39 that started this all.
Seems like a big circle to me.

PS of course we all know that the 7.62 soviet series are actually .311 and we use .308 and of course the current lapua brass is better than the stell cases that most soviet bolck surpluss ammo is loaded with and the PPC and Grendel have a slightly sharper shoulder angle and less case taper but it all comes around back to the parent cartridge.

Sounds like some pretty good things have come from tweaking of the parent case to me.---Mike Ezell:)
