.30-340 weatherby???

I am looking at building a .30-340 weatherby for a 1500- 1700 yard deer gun. I am predicting 3100 fps with a 210 grain. Is this realistic? Does anyone have some advice for this cartridge? I am favoring the .30 and not .338 for the simple reason of very limited bullet/maker selection. i am looking for pros and cons to this load, any advice. Thank you TC

There are quality, high BC, .338 cal bullets made in 250-300 grain range. That is the choice of most of the people that actually shoot game at extended to extreme ranges.
The 408 Chey-Tac may be a better choice but the price will be several times higher than a typical 338 magnum cartridge based on the .532 or the Wby 378 rim diameter.

30378

Exactly! Maybe he meant "378" in which case (pun intended) he needn't ask for load information because that's a cartridge that's been around for a while.

Or maybe he meant something else all together?? Or he's pulling on our leg.

shootn1000, what say you??

30-340

A 308 Baer starts from a 340 wtby necked down and the shoulder blown out to 35 deg.and is very similar to a 300ACK.This will move a 210 gr bullet 3100 fps. Any questions for load data can be answered here on this forum.

If you are indeed going to such a large case as the 378 case, make sure you put a 28 or 30 inch barrel on it for maximum velocity. The 300 Weatherby with a 28 inch barrel performs very well with a lot less expense...

thanks for the advise.

Thank you everyone. I was not aware of the 300 weatherby being the same cartridge when i posted it. I have been playing around with the cost differnces b/t this and the 378, and man are you right. But the bigger question is, is it worth the extra for the 1500- 1700 yard whitetails. do you know what kind of realistic speed i can get with .338-378 with 300grain SMK. Will the 300 weatherby comfortably shoot the 210 3100fps or is this tipping the powder can?

I dont know what hold the deer still for 2.5 seconds, but i do know that 5 of them stood still for that long last year.

No it will not do 3100 fps

I shoot the 210 VLD out of a 11 twist 31.25" Broughton chambered in .300 Ackley and 3050 fps is as fast as I care to shoot them. I was shooting 79.5 gr. of REL25 doing 3050, I got a new 5# can with a different lot number and 79.5 gr. pushed it to 3125 fps! At 3125 lifting the bolt was hard and a sliver of brass stuck the ejector down. This new lot number will do 3050 fps with 77.5 gr. Please be carefull swapping lot numbers!!! I learned my lesson, don't try to push it.

thank you for the info

That is what i info i am after. i agree not to run it that hard. I have bought an 8 lbs keg so i will be in the clear for awhile on lot numbers. any more advise is greatly appreciated. Tc

I shoot 210/RL 25 in a 300 WBY. In my match gun my hunting load is 83 g @ 3190 out of a 30" tube. I have been as high as 3300 before I saw any PSI signs. But ...rest assured....the PSI is high before I see the signs. The chrono tells me so!!!

Oh, by the way...my match load crawls along at a pittifull 2780 fps

The "sweet spots" were at 2780, 2920, 3030 ish, and 3190. But...2780 was THE load. A PLUS......my brass should last untill the second comming.:D

I may volunteer to hold the annimal for you....but will need to see you shoot first!!!;);)

Good luck, and have BIG FUN,
Tod

Not trying to start a fight BUT. How good are you at shooting? Do you have the ability to shoot deer at 1500-1700yds. What is your experience? I know a lot shooters who in there eyes are great long range shooters but can't hit a deer at 300yds: BUT it does not stop them from trying really long shots 500+yds. Where is the respect for the game you are hunting?

Just answering post, nothing more, nothing less. I had 5 opportunities last year at deer between 1100-1400yds. I executed all five without an unfornitinate happening. This is the limit for the rig I have. I won the IBS light gun and all around National 1000yd in 2004. I shoot ALOT, but not that much competition b/c I am still in school. I am very careful with days I pick and the shots. No "iffy" shots for me. With the high risk of a miss, I refrain from mature bucks. Thank you for the post. TC

shootn1000 Great you seem to have the disipline and ability to do what you intend.

Tod Thanks I wondered who would reply first to a comment like this. The post was not directed at you, but a simple comment that just owning a rifle capable of doing what this guy wants to do does not make it possible that is all, in other words you can't buy the skill to shoot at these ranges.
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY QUESTION IGNORE IT BECAUSE IT WAS NOT DIRECTED AT YOU!

I remember you...

... you bought the gun from your cousin Robbie and showed up out of nowhere to win LG in Ohio.

We missed you and Robbie this year. Actually, I am somewhat glad that you missed it:D

good to hear from you Danny. Ya i had Billy Dale put a different barrel on it so i can do some of this. Hopefully one day i can put that barrel back on and come eat some lunch and shoot with you at a shoot. all you guys have been great support to me, and i enjoy hanging out with you. TC

This is my graduation present from my wife. So i am fumbling through the calibers to see what is next.

I talked to Robbie last week, and i think he has went belly up. ha ha.

Just having a little fun.....and remembering the 230+ posts on this topic last year. Things got a "touch" heated last time.

By the way....since we are on the subject...my 9 year old Jr PETA member shot his third deer in three years last night.....this one at 514 yards with my 6mm Dasher/105 Berger @ 3050 fps. Took the heart out....fist size exit hole just behind the off sholder.:D:D:D

NO RESPECT, I TELL YA'
