Any opinions on this combination?

Would a 1:11 twist be fast enough?

TIA

30-284 was developed by PO Ackley in the 1950s

I shoot 210 Bergers in a 308 with a 32", 1:10, 5C Broughton. I am able to get 2650 fps. 46 grains of powder is about max with out a compressed load. VV550 is great in cool weather but too temperature sensitive for warm weather.

I also thought about doing a 30-284. The added case capacity (58 grains) might allow you to shoot H-4831 SC, RE-17, IMR-4350, and yes a friend did some testing with Varget with surprising results.

The Berger 185 and Sierra 190 will also give you better results than the 210s.

I also think the 30/284 will do better with the 185 to 190 grain bullets. 210's may be a little heavy for it. In mine, powders like 4350 and 4831 work well, and of course N160. An 11 twist will do fine.

The 30/284 is often overlooked, but they sure do shoot well.

I've shot various 210gr bullets through a 12" twist that is currently on my HG with no issues for 600 and 1000yd work.

Don't have any real experience with a 30-284 though.

Steve, your .30 is the equivalent of a .308 Norma Mag (88 grains water full to overflow). I've shot some long 210s in my 12 twist which uses a very similar case. These bullets are on 1.400 jackets, but the final bullet is even longer than Brady Knight's 200 BT, which is also on 1.400 jackets. I don't have a Berger for comparison.

The .30/284 is the equivalent of the .30/06. Still, I suspect an 11-twist in this capacity region will work with the 210 Bergers.

Opinion -- and only that -- on the .30/284 is that it would be fine, maybe a bit much -- for 600 yards, but a bit light for 1,000 yards. You gotta remember that 600 yards isn't really long range, but 1,0000 surely is. For 1,000, I'd think a .30/06 AI is about the smallest I'd want to compete with, given that there will be guys with larger .30s & good barrels.

I know the .308 Winchester is the Palma cartridge, which is shot at 1,000. My way of looking at it is that nothing good ever happens when the bullet drops below 1400 fps. Not the same as saying something bad will happen, but why find out?
