30-06 custom barrel question

Hey guys! I would like some opinions on a rifle I want to build.I have a Parker Hale midland model in 30-06 and the barrel is a bit pitted so I would like to to do one of two things.I would like to get a Bartlein barrel in heavy varmint contour in 1 in 10 twist fitted onto the same Parker Hale Midland action or get another action fitted with the Bartlein barrel.Ideally I would like to go with the second option but in South Africa the licensing process is so damn terrible that you lose faith in even doin so as you have to reapply for a license for the barrel and the action.Would it be a good idea to fit the new barrel on my existing action which be easier as in I just have to relicense a new barrel? I know the Parker Hale Midland rifle isn't the best gun in the world but I always use it for hunting but I just need some opinions coming from you guys.The Bartlein should set me back around 10 000 South African Rands which is around 1000 U.S Dollars.

Hi Nishon, Is your Parker Hale rifle fitted with a Springfield action or a Mauser 98 action as they used both, am not sure if x military 98s or commercial 98s were used , but if military it will have a thumb notch in left hand side. If it is a genuine 98 of either persuasion I would go ahead and re barrel it, if it is an x Springfield with the cocking piece removed I would get something else as some Springfields are ok and some are junk. It is interesting to hear about South African gun laws as it did not seem to slow Oscar Presarus down much. I thought things were bad here in Australia but yours seem worse.

Hi Murphy
Its the model 2600 Midlands special.It comes with the Mauser action fitted with a springfield bolt.Not sure if its worth rebarreling or not.

The way yalls gun laws are id bet its loads easier to rebarrel than replace. Like in the other forum call terry- hes an expert on this and a great guy

What caliber is your Parker Hale? Are American rifles such as Rugers and Remingtons available in your part of the world? Are you on a tight budget, or are funds available for a new rifle.
