How long does my barrel need to be to reach the 2950 fps mark with the 180 vld with the .284 shehane what about the straight .284 win?

284 Shehane vs. 284

Bulldog:

My accuracy load of H4831SC in my 284 Shehane prone guns runs 2950 shooting the 180 Berger in barrels about 31" to 31.5"

Jerry Tierney's accuracy load with H4831SC and the 180 Bergers in his straight 284 runs about 2850.

I think Bryan Litz is about 2825 with H4350 and the 180 Berger in his long range 284 prone gun.

284 Shehane

IMHO, a 26" barrel would be too short. For all intents, the only reason for the 284 Shehane is to gain an advantage at long range -- for all the reasons I mentioned in another thread. With a 26" barrel, you simply lose many of the advantages of the chambering.

With a 26" barrel, I see no point in any modification to the straight 284. Opinions may vary.

Would a 26'' be to short
QuickLOAD does not show the 284 SHehane but using the 284 Win then running it up to 2950 with IMR4831 in a 31.5" barrel, then cutting the barrel back to 26" shows the velocity at 2843. Keep in mind this is all theoretical, but IMR4831 would pretty much be all burned up at 26" in a 7MM barrel wouldn't it?

+3 on the comment that 26" is probably too short. My brother gets to just under 2,900 with his straight .284 out of a 30" tube. Add 3.5-5.0 grains of powder and you can certainly reach the promised land with the Shehane, I suspect it will take something on the order of 28-30 to get there.

284 Shehane Barrel Length

I have been breaking in two barrels chambered for the 284 Shehane and Berger 180s. Based on what I have been seeing, the change from 31 inches to 26 inches would cost you 100 fps at maximum QuickLoad estimated pressures.
