264win mag in F-class?

Ok, looking to rebarrel my 300 win this fall. Its still shooting ok, but starting to foul faster than it did and groups are opening up a touch. Was thinking on 6.5x284, but it has a smaller bolt face, so started looking at the 264. i know its a barrel burner, but saves me the cost of a bolt, and its even flatter than the 6.5x284. The longest range around here is 600yards, so it would be a waste, but its either that or stick with 300wm. any other ideas?

6.5-25WSSM.

Buying brass might be a bit tricky, but if you're crazy enough, you could form it from WSM or Remington Ultramagnum brass...

Oh yes. On known distance ranges - flat shooting doesn't win. Reading the wind and knowing how to hold well matters a lot more.

With the magnum bolt you might want to consider a look at the 7WSM or its various wildcat cousins 7/270 or 7/300WSM.

A host of information can be found here:

I'm personally running the straight 7WSM for F-Class open, but the others are just as amazing. In my opinion, the 7mm high BC bullets are the top of teh heap when it comes to the weight versus BC tradeoff.

I know the wind is the hard part, and i also know that all the rounds mentioned have less wind deflection than the 300 ive been shooting. Looked at the 7mm's and they seem interesting. probley easier on barrels to.

You can get a replacement bolt from PTG for not a lot of money if you choose to go with a cartridge with a .473 case head diameter which would give you everything based off the .308, 30-06, 7 X 57 and 284 parent cases.

On the other hand, you could chamber it in 7mm RSAUM. I've heard the .300 RSAUM Norma brass whcih could be necked down, although pricey is good quality. Reason I suggest the RSAUM is that the WSMs are a bit more overbore and the RSAUM gives a little less volume and a little more neck.

I'd advise against the .264 mag as it is a serious barrel burner, and brass availabillity and quality are always questionable.

The 6.5 Rem mag is essentially the 6.5 X 284 with a belt and larger diameter base.

I think i like the 7mm rsaum. I use this rifle as a all around gun, I also shoot it in 300yard hunter class at the local range, and last year knocked down steel at 1200yrds with it at a buddies ranch in western kansas, were its also taken a couple deer, and plenty of coyotes, but i dont shoot deer past 400 unless im taking someone elses wonded. I used this gun to get 3rd in my first f-class, so its a work horse. I want to keep it under 12lbs too. I think one of the fast sevens would be my best bet.

I used a .264 Win. Mag. for 1000-yard matches back in the late 1960's. It would hold about 1 MOA at 1000 yards with Norma 139-gr. nickel plated match bullets. Won some matches with it, too.

The last match I shot with it was at 600 yards and I had put my first 8 shots in the 6-inch X ring when it shot a wide 10 for the 9th one. Next two shots were 9's. By the time all 20 record shots were fired, it was flinging bullets into the 8 ring over a foot away from call. That barrel had about 650 rounds through it when it went sour.

Recoil with the .264's a bit much for precision shooting. There's much less recoil as the bullet's going down the barrel with a 6.5x284. Lighter recoiling rifles have always been easier to shoot accurately compared to the heavier ones.

I'm thinking on just picking up a short action remmy and going with like 260 or 6.5x284. I like my 300 and want to keep it how it is, just rebarrel it with a 24" broughton of the same countor. Now need to get some money together to build the next one. trying to figure out how I want it. Thanks for everybodys help.

You can use a short action for loading and shooting 6.5-284s. However, removing a loaded round from one may require you to remove the bolt. This is why most 6.5-284s are built on long actions instead.
