25 yard one holer, 50 yard 1.5"

Got a call from a Remington owner complaining about the accuracy of his new target rifle. He stated that at 25 yards he was getting one hole groups, but that at 50 yards he could not get better than .75-1.5" groups. Asked him about conditions, scope and ammo specifics, etc. and came away from the conversation thinking that he was a pretty knowledgeable shooter. No, he wasn't using wind flags, but was testing in the absolute calm using a high end scope, and his model 52 was still making great groups under the same conditions as the new rifle. He had tried all the best target ammo and still had not found anything that would hold up at 50 yards.

I have seen this same phenomenon with some of my rifles and although I have ideas about why this happens, I would like to know from others how common this is and what are thought to be the main causes.

I'll take a guess at action bind or bedding. but one would need to see the actual groups.

What twist rate?

You mentioned Remington. What twist rate? They manufactured several with 14" & some with 16" twist. Depending on the ammo, it may not be stabilized at 50 yards. Whats it doing at 100 Yards.
