Hey all, I have it in mind that I may want a 25-06 as my go to all around rifle. I know there are a lot to choose from. I would love to have this in a 20" barrel. Anyone have suggestions? 20" too short for the caliber?

somebody should run the numbers to see if its really that bad to have 4 less inches of barrel on a 25-06 or if a handier handling rifle would do for his application. I suspect a 25-06 on anything but an antelope will be limited past 350yds and a 20" wont hurt. just a guess from figuring this all out before, but this particular case may surprise me.

I bought a Remington Sendero in 25-06 when the Sendero was first introduced. They all came with an HS precision Stock and an Aluminum bedding Block and a 26 inch barrel. The aluminum bedding block was Remington’s idea for an accuracy enhancing feature.

The Rifle was a little bit heavy for shoulder slinging and climbing in and out of Deer Blinds. It was an exceptionally accurate Rifle using my reloads. My pet load consisted of 120gr nosler partitions and H1000. I Harvested several Texas Whitetail Deer at distances up to 300yds. With good shot placement, I see no reason why it wouldn,t work at longer distances on larger game. I doubt if a 20 inch barrel would make that much difference. The animal certainly wouldn,t know the difference.

I liked that Sendero so much,I ended up buying one in 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag. I don’t have either one of them Sendero,s today. I let Ron Prachyl talk me into trading them on Some Benchrest Rifles.:(

I could kick myself in the @#$.

Rem 25-06

Hi!
My experience (back in the '60s) with a 25-06 goes back before it became a commercial round. I built an all around Deer/Varmint gun using a Rem 721 barreled with a 22" Douglas 10 twist. Great gun! Handloading was no problem. It ate 4831 surplus powder using 87 Sierra and 117 Nosler bullets. GI 30-06 brass was plentiful and cheap. A friend talked me out of it...wish i'd kept it too. I'd recommend a 22" barrel, nothing shorter.

Good Luck!

I bought a Ruger 77 in 25-06 in 1989 to go on an antelope hunt in Wyoming. I don't think I would want one with a barrel shorter than 24. The biggest problem I see with 25-06 is bullets. I don't think anyone makes one so it would have to be custom but a 6.5-06 is so close to the 25-06 they are ballisticly the same only they make lots of real good 6.5 bullets. I use the 115 Nosler BT bullets in mine.

If you really like the 25-06 and you want to make it an all purpose Rifle and you want it with a 20inch barrel, why not build it with a 20 inch barrel. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you can always have a longer barrel installed.

A special Rifle deserves special attention.

According to QuickLoad;

52g IMR4895/ 87g Sierra/24" barrel MV=3530fps 100 yard zero drop @350=12.3'
20" barrel MV=3360fps ditto drop=14.2"

My buddy has one of the very first Senderos in 25-06. He gets outstanding accuracy w/ 100-gr Ballistic Tip and it is a great antelope and mule deer gun. He runs slow powders like H-1000, and the 26-in barrel really makes use of them. I can't imagine going shorter than 24 inches, otherwise go with 257 Roberts.

A good 25-cal varmint bullet, if all you want to do is blow rock chucks and coyotes to smithereens, is the 87-gr TNT.

I know you seem to want a 25-06

as an all around rifle but it may be a bit too small a tube. I would suggest you look at a nice 6.5mm. My choice would be the 6.5x55 Sweed. You can use very light bullets in the 100 grain range and also up to 160 gr for big game. It's a very capable cartridge.

If you are going the custom rifle route, a 6.5x47 is good also and if you want really max from the caliber something like a 6.5 Rogue (a 6.5x55 sweed case blown out) is very good. Don't expect the barrel life you will get with a straight sweed in the Rogue though.

In the 25 and .264 calibers in order to get max velocities you need barrel length. At least 22" but 24" better, imho. --Greg

"Beware of the hunter who has only one gun. He may know how to use it."

The 25-06 is a fine calibur for hunting in the hands of a shooter with confidence in himself and the rifle. 20" or 26"? The animal will never know the difference. Get what you like and never worry about what the other hunter likes.
