243 Winchester X 6-47 Lapua

Hi

I need a repeater rifle for paper punching 600 to 1000 yards in 243 caliber

Must be a repeater, (6 BR is out)


Accuracy potential is the first requirement, and good usefull barrel life is good too.

Seems my decision must be among 6X47 Lapua, 243 Winchester and 6 SLR

My first choice was the 6X47 Lapua, but after reading this cartdrige is tricky to find a good accurate load, I am more confused than before.

243 Winchester seems a good choice, but against it, we have short barrel life.

I know nothing about these others, so your valuable opinions are welcome

Help me choose my next caliber.

I shoot the 6x47 Lapua as do quite a few of my clubmates in F Class competition and 600 yd benchrest.

Reloader 17 provides excellent velocities and accuracy with the 105gn Berger VLD.

The 6X47 Lapua was my first choice, due the small rifle primer pocket and excellent Lapua brass, but after reading many complains in another forum about how hard is to make it shoot small groups, I am almost changing my choice.


As the potential for small groups is my first requirement, I am very undecided about what cartdrige to choose...


This rifle will be assembled with a custom action, Krieger barrel, tight neck, to achieve maximum precision and hoping for small groups


So, with these requirements, what would be your choice sequence?

What makes you think magazine fed 6 BR rifles don't exist? They do, and provided that magazines are good (single stacks are preferred), can be as repeatable and reliable as any other centerfire.

Manufacturers:

Bleiker: They make 8 and 10 shot magazine variants. Not cheap, but quality is supposed to be good. Price sheet (in English) is at http://www.bleiker.ch/fileadmin/user_upload/Gesamtprospekt_ENGLISH_2013.pdf . WARNING: This is a 15 meg file.

Blaser: Imported into the US by SiG, the R93 LRS2 might fit your needs. Again, not cheap, but again, quality is good.

Elisio: "Tube" style rifle stocks. (You provide the action.) Fed from a single stack magazine, some models are designed to magazine feed 6 BRs. Not sure if Gary is set up as an exporter, please contact him for details. See http://www.gotxring.com/high-power/ for his repeater "stock" models.​

Rechambering an existing rifle is also an option. As I understand it, some Tikka rifles (595s, and maybe the T3s) can be converted to reliably feed and fire 6BRs.

The problem is that for the rules, any BR case or its variatios arent allowed, as we already have one tournament where these are permited.

After looking over the thread on the other forum, it seems as though the criticism of the 6 X 47 Lapua came primarily from folks that were disappointed that it was not as easy to tune as a 6BR or Dasher. I have fitted 5 different barrels for 6 X 47 on Remington, Stiller, and BAT actions. None were difficult to get tuned and I was able to match 243 Win velocities with lower spreads in every case. I have no argument about the performance of the 6BR class of cartridges, but among the choices you are considering, the 6 X 47 is my hands down favorite.

It may be a question of the style of competition you intend to use the rifle for. Benchrest shooters place a premium on a cartridge that produces consistently low extreme spreads and tiny groups. Highpower shooters have to contend with a delay between shots and may be willing to give up a little accuracy edge for velocity to reduce wind drift.

With the 6X47 Lapua, what is the accuracy potencial? ( if this even exist) The driver skill is out...

Sorry if I'm being annoying, but I would make the right choice, and I count on the opinion of those who have more access to information, as bring one rifle from USA to my country is expensive

In this country the 6BR and improved versions like the Dasher more or less rule the roost for 600 yard bench rest competition. At 1000 yds., a wide variety of cartridges are used. The eastern shoots see quite a few Dashers etc. while the western groups seem to favor larger cases including the 6.5-284, 7mm WSM, and many others.

As far as the F class shooters, I don't know what cartridges they prefer except that many shoot the FTR class with .308.

My 6X47 is certainly a 1/4 MOA rifle. I do have to work a little more to get there than I do with a 6BR. The 6X47 has a substantial velocity advantage so it is a trade off.
