Guys I have a Remington 700 barrel in 243 that a friend wants me to rechamber to 6mm Rem. As most of you know you don't have much room to set back a factory 700 barrel so I am not sure if there is enough room to set it back and make it work. Anyone ever tried this before or can tell me just how far I need to set back to clear the old chamber? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I, for one, wouldn't try it. I don't think there is enough barrel in front of the receiver due to the contour beginning at the recoil lug. If you have a case for the 6mm and .243 you can stand them up side-by-side and take some measurements. That will give you a rough idea of what you're facing.

Thanks Mickey, that was my thinking. I've got a book of Cartridge deminsions, but just looking at the measurements on paper is tough for me to get a feel. I'll compare the cases tomorrow, but I don;t think it's going to be possible. Never hurts to ask

You can make it a 6mm BR or a 6mm Rem Ackley Improved... but you run out of barrel to make it a 6mm Rem. If it is a short action it's really too short for that anyway...

Such a handloader user friendly ctg as the 6mm/.244 Remington deserves the cost of a new barrel blank anyway.:)

I agree, but the factory barrels let me play around, and gain more barrel fitting experience for not much money. We've got rifles we play around with, and then ones we are serious about. I just bought a 6mmAI reamer for my current project so I may rechamber it to that. It won't be ideal out of the 24" barrel, but it will work for what it will be used for.
