.22X6mm Bullets??

To all:

My friend wants to build a .22 caliber rifle on a 6mm case and use heavy bullets.

He contacted Berger who advised his 75gr. on up VLD bullets would not hold up at those velocities in a 1X7 twist barrel. he already has the barrel.

Any bullet recommendations or other wise?

I think you're bailing against the tide with that rate of twist. 1 in 9 is more usual for that caliber.
 
I'd suggest using a .243 case instead of a 6mm Remington case as it will feed out of a short action magazine, plus you have the advantage of using Lapua brass if you want. We've been using 8 twist barrels on .22-243's. They will push a 80 gr bullet around 3400 to 3500 fps. If you get much over that with a 8 twist barrel the bullets will start coming apart. A 7 twist barrel will probably lower the speed that you will be able to push the bullet before the bullet will start coming apart. Just because the cartridge is capable of pushing a bullet up to where the bullet comes apart doesn't mean that you have to load it to that level. Just use that as a basis for backing the load off.
 
Mike is spot on, as usual.
I've been using the .22-243 for a couple of years and it is a very accurate round shooting 80smk's out of a 8 twist barrel. As icing on the cake you can also shoot the 69smks at around 3,700fps. It is fast, accurate and devastating !

Just pass a .243 case through a .22-243 sizing die and starting loading! Dies are available from Redding..
 
You can't get any better advice that what Pat and Mike have given you. They are among the best. A Hall of Fame shooter and what I call a Hall of Fame gunsmith.

You should try 90 gr VLD Berger

Sam,

The information you got from Berger wasn't wrong but it was incomplete. You can use the 90 gr VLD in that twist. I recommend that you listen to Mike and not load it as hot as it can go but the results should be good. No reason to throw that 7" twist barrel in the bin.

If they don't work for you or come apart I'll make it right.

22x6mm bullets

The 1/7 is the colt gi twist on the m16 a4 for 22 caliber
