I've been pleased with 40 grain Ballistic tips, AA 1680 powder and Rem 61/2 primers. If you can't find 61/2's small pistol magnum primers have been used by many with good results.

40 gr. Ballistic Tips, LilGun Powder and pistol primers. I once had a custom ammunition bussiness, when Ruger first came out with the Hornet, most would not shoot worth beans. Once I found the above load I never had a dissatisfied customer
One word about Hornets
Well, two acually - Lil' Gun. This is only powder that I could get my rifle to shoot under 1" at 100 yards with and it is GREAT in my opinion.
This is THE powder to get a hornet to shoot well. My personal load for my Anschutz 22 Hornet is 13 grains of Lil' Gun with a 40 grain Hornady A-Max and Winchester small rifle primer in Remington cases.

The magic happened with our Hornets when we opened them up to K hornet Chambers. All of a sudden with just one more grain of powder you gain about 300 fps! And all the bullets that didn't perform well in game started really working. H 110 was the powder of choice when we did this... haven't changed anything in 15 years... why mess with success?

I have been happy with 12.5 to 13 gr. of Lil Gun and 35 gr. v-max for around 3000 fps and 1 inch groups.

I have 2 rifles in 22 hornet. They are a CZ 527 and a Martini Cadet.
My favorite load is a Nosler 40gr or a Sierra 40gr ( sie-1385) in front of 13.8 gr of Lil Gun ( Caution Hodgdon Max listed is 13 gr of Lil Gun) I worked up to this load. I use Rem 7 1/2 primers. My best with the Cz is .333, but a more reasonable expectation is 3/4". My experience is the CZ, with 5 shot groups, will place 3 rounds touching and other 2 are within 1/2" or 3/4" resulting in 3/4" to 1" groups. A friend shoots a Browning A-bolt Micro Hunter. He ran 14 groups averaging .6" with 13grs of LiL Gun. the 15th was 3/4". Three shots prove the rifle , 5 shots prove the rifleman. Most test target accompaning new rifles are 3 shot groups. I just acquired a Custom Winchester Lowwall, 1950 vintage, in a Hornet. It was built by CC Johnson.
It has been too cold here to make it to the range. You learn a lot of language skills when shooting a Hornet. Some I remember hearing at MCRD boot camp.

As is usual, what works best varies on the rifle and the shooter.
In the Lyman Reloading Handbook 49th edition, they got the best results with a compressed load of 14 gr. of Accurate 1680 powder, Sierra JSP #1200 40 gr. bullets, Winchester brass and Wolf small rifle primers.
That, however may mean nothing for your rifle. If your rifle was manufactured before WW II it may even need .223 diameter bullets, rather than .224 diameter as is standard today.
I think anyone here would suggest you buy a good reloading handbook and try the different powders, loads and bullets the book recommends until you find what works best for you and your rifle.
