Hi all

I want to buy a Remington 700 VLS or CZ 527 varmint laminate in 223 and rebarrel with a 1:8 twist to suit 80 grain projectiles like the Sierra or A-max.

Will an 80 grain projectile seated with the boat tail at the neck-shoulder junction fit in the magazine of either rifle?

I'm guessing it's more likely in the longer action of the Remington 700?

Thanks
Ben

In a standard .223 rifle, NO. The magazine box isn't long enough, and the bolt stop prevents opening the bolt far enough to magazine feed a round loaded with an 80.

Change bolt stops and magzine boxes to .22-250 parts, and your idea works.

the typical oal of a sie 80 in an ar with a wilde or similar chamber is somewhere around 2.45x

with a .3 seating depth( boatail .155 and some body) oal is aprox 2.55....

your milage may vary

How will the 223 rounds feed from the 22-250 mag?

The CZ527 has a detachable magazine and I'm pretty sure it can't be swapped for the 550 magazine, so it'll have to be the Remington 700 then I guess.

Getting a magazine box for a 22-250 is easy enough, but how well will the 223 rounds feed from it?

I'm guessing (again) that the feed lips will need to be modified by my 'smith?

Thanks

New question

Now I'm considering the Tikka T3 in 223 with the factory 1:8 twist barrel.

Will the magazine feed rounds loaded with 80 grain projectiles?

Otherwise I'll go with Asa's suggestion of using a modified 22-250 magazine in the Remington 700 VLS, maybe even a detachable HS Precision magazine (on sale at Midway).

Thanks again,
Ben.
