i am looking to put together a short range bench/varmint, depending on the accuracy achievable on a cartridge that i have not come accross in the benchrest arena in .22 reed express(7.62x25 tok necked down to .22 with the shoulders blown forward). The case holds 11.5g of water to overflow would anybody be able to direct me with possible powder choices and velocities from a 22'' barrel (reeds has done some testing but they are all with 5 and 10" barrels for contender pistols, they have reported 2700fps), and a twist rate for 35 to 55g bullets. i know it is an odd choice for a cartidge but i am looking for something light to shoot and get my technique down and have some fun at the range with, without spending huge dollars and something different always has an appeal.

Here is the best suggestion I can come up with for a KNOWN accurate .22...
Brass is available/ease of tune/strait forward no case forming not expensive set-up..

220Russian.............

Next would be the 22Beggs...

7.62x25 tok ...........<<< Terrible brass quality = Questionable accuracy potential.
Do yourself a favor and base your project off the Lapua 220Russian case.

You can form 7.62 Tok brass from .223 brass Lapua (if you Like) or 221 Fireball brass. Form dies are available from RCBS or possibly Reeds.Reeds may also have the dies or brass.
 
there are a few different supplies of brass and as was pointed out a different parent may be used.
i am the kind of person that likes to try something new for the pleasure of the unknown

I would love to know highest velocities i may achieve and what barrel twists are recommended.

is what I looked at awhile back with the 85-87 gr. bullets. Last I checked the Form dies were about 200-250$ all cases would have to be annealed before and after forming,so it would be a lot of work (BUT COOL).In 22cal it would SMOKE the FN 5.7x28. Do the reserch well and good luck:D:D
 
I was scratching thru an old box of rubbish last week & found a 7 x 30 case that came in a bag of 500 Sako .222 Magnum cases I bought back in the sixties. Now if you could find some of them...
 
yes it does have alot more energy than the FN and i was hoping with the right TLC it would be potentially very accurate and very powder efficient little bunny destroyer and perhaps do well on the bench. the forming dies are very cheap and i would need a reamer as i live in australia and cant mail my action around the world, that is only about $150 USD

7x30 waters?

it just sounds like fun and that is what shooting is all about! barrel life would be amazing.
 
Damn! I was wrong. I just went out & found it & it's a 7 x 33 Sako - the one they built on the L46 & maybe some L461s.

Not only that, but I can't upload a shot of it because my digital camera just went belly up when I tried to use it.

very interesting little case build off the parabellum wasnt it?

the only limiting factor would be supplies of good quality brass, there seems to be very little mention of it on the net....

For the people that think case forming dies are expensive. Go to my website or the classifieds here. Our dies will accomidate any brass from 30-06 size and down. You can go as short as 1.075 and as small as 14 caliber.

I'm also very interested in the 22 Reed Express as I have the CZ - 52 ( Reeds been out of barrels every time I checked )... I'd also do a Contender barrel, as I collect them...

never thought of it in a rifle though ???

I'm currently starting to load & play with a 17 K Hornet... like the little stuff as much as I like the boomers...
 
yeah a rifle is what i had in mind for it, id like to know how much we can get out of the little case...
 
I got a new camera!

Cheap & cheerful, but not at all foul on macros.

Here's the 7x33. That's a .308W case for comparison.
