I'm getting my son a new Savage Mark II .22 for Christmas and was wondering if I should break the gun in the same was as a high power rifle. Clean, shoot, clean, shoot, etc... All comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'm not sure if the rimfire BR guys break in their rimfire barrels, but I've never found a factory .22 LR sporter barrel that needed much cleaning let alone break in. I've been running a couple of patches wet with Bore Tech Rimfire Blend through the bore followed by a dry patch when changing brands or types of ammunition. After shooting I run a couple of patches wet with Rimfire Blend through the bore then one that has a little Rimfire Blend on it and store the rifle that way.

Rimfire Blend is available from Sinclair International if you can't find it locally. I've also found that a .20 cal cleaning rod is helpful for .22 rimfires since the ejectors tend to stick up and scrape .22 cal rods.

You'll find

a lot of info on this on rimfire central. I think generally, no you don't go through the procedures you described. I cleaned my son's new Buckmark 22 pistol to get out all the goo before I wrapped it. I'll take a boresnake and some Kroil and wipe it out occasionally while he's shooting it tomorrow, then once again when we get home.

I have a boreguide for my 17 HMR and clean it just like a centerfire.

But the .22's generally need some lube on the barrel to shoot well. I rarely do a full centerfire type cleaning on a .22 RF - just a little maintenance with oil and patches to keep the residue and any possible rust under control

my first gun was a marlin semi-auto .22 not only did it NOT require break-in it said right in the owners manual it should never require bore cleaning when using regular rounds

Direct

I have several Anschutz 54's. Almost directy from the manual: "Clean after first 500 rounds, then clean every 5000 rounds."

I have a 10/22 that has 1000's of rounds throught it and has never been cleaned.

22 RF's are much different than centerfires.

More 22 RF's bores ruined because cleaning.

You can not use a 22 centerfire cleaning rod in a 22 RF bore, because it is to large.

NOTE: These statements have nothing to do with 22 RF BR..............................

BTW if you are concerned don't shhot anything but plain lead bullets. No copper coated bullets.

Standard velocity CCI are great.

Check the bore before shooting for obstructions.

Just take him to the range and let him shoot it. I generally don't clean the bore on 22rf's. The autoloaders do need to have the actions cleaned and lubricated periodically. But in general, leave the bore alone unless it gets some foreign material or moisture in it.

Thanks everyone for your comments... I thought a .22 didn't need the same brake-in as a CF, just wanted to be on the safe side. All my other .22's I've just shot out of the box and they seem to shoot good

My son is really looking forward to being able to shoot a youth rifle, now he will no longer have to tuck the butt under his arm pit. This is my first Savage, I just hope it shoots as well as my Marlin 25N.
