22-243
I have been playing with a 22-55mm Improved Swede for the last year,
1 in 8 twist Krieger, so Some things to consider in high performance 22's
1. Intended velocity and barrel lenght will determine powder type and amount,
will probably need to be pretty slow, I mostly use H1000 or Retumbo or
some other brand with a similar burn rate (See rate chart)
2. Using a relative long, (28-30 inch) high quality barrel with the correct
Twist you can drive these bullets to destruction, (I use moly also)so there
cant be any really spectacular velocities, the intended use of these bullets
were for .223 say something like 2700 fps give or take a little. The problem
becomes high RPM 2700 fps = RPM 277,714 at 3400 fps = RPM 349,714 in
the past berger bullet jackets would not stand up to the force. Recently
berger has separated the bullets, Hunting and Target, hunting bullets have
the thinner jacket for expansion purposes and new model target bullets
have a thicker jacket now, should be able to stand more RPM, but as of
yet I Have not tried them.
3. I would think at this point for myself that my current case design is way
overbore and probably I would consider a 22-250 Ackley Improved case
close to max, maybe the 22-243 (I don't know if your case is improved or
not), but it seems that normally accuracy is best around 3000 fps give or
take a little.
4. I tried all the heavy 80-90 grain bullets, Sierra's 80 grain seemed to be the
toughest but, even those won't stand 3850 fps. This extreme performance
does not make for the best accuracy so at a reduced load and velocity of
3650 fps the best I have ever got from the rifle is about .750 at 350 yards.
