I am putting together a 22-243. I am using a shilen 7 tw barrel and berger 80 and 90 grain bullets. What would be the best powder and how much to start with. Anything thing else important to know toss in also. Thanks in advance.

22-243

I have been playing with a 22-55mm Improved Swede for the last year,
1 in 8 twist Krieger, so Some things to consider in high performance 22's
1. Intended velocity and barrel lenght will determine powder type and amount,
will probably need to be pretty slow, I mostly use H1000 or Retumbo or
some other brand with a similar burn rate (See rate chart)
2. Using a relative long, (28-30 inch) high quality barrel with the correct
Twist you can drive these bullets to destruction, (I use moly also)so there
cant be any really spectacular velocities, the intended use of these bullets
were for .223 say something like 2700 fps give or take a little. The problem
becomes high RPM 2700 fps = RPM 277,714 at 3400 fps = RPM 349,714 in
the past berger bullet jackets would not stand up to the force. Recently
berger has separated the bullets, Hunting and Target, hunting bullets have
the thinner jacket for expansion purposes and new model target bullets
have a thicker jacket now, should be able to stand more RPM, but as of
yet I Have not tried them.
3. I would think at this point for myself that my current case design is way
overbore and probably I would consider a 22-250 Ackley Improved case
close to max, maybe the 22-243 (I don't know if your case is improved or
not), but it seems that normally accuracy is best around 3000 fps give or
take a little.
4. I tried all the heavy 80-90 grain bullets, Sierra's 80 grain seemed to be the
toughest but, even those won't stand 3850 fps. This extreme performance
does not make for the best accuracy so at a reduced load and velocity of
3650 fps the best I have ever got from the rifle is about .750 at 350 yards.

I use H-1000 or Reloader 25. Both are good powders for that round. I would stay away from the Berger 80 grains unless you slow them down. But my guess is you want to go fast. The Seirra 80 grain bullets work great and will take the speed. I know Berger has or is working on the jacket issue. But I was seeing "puffs" of smoke at 100 yards and never making it to the 600 yard target.

I use H-1000 at this time in both my hunting gun and My F-Class gun. The reloader 25 works great but is much dirtier. Good Luck

keep the speed around 3350, but don't go over 3400!!!

I shot RL 25 for along time until i tried H 4350. 41 to 42 grains. Low extreme spreads and very accurate. May want to start around 40 grains. I am shooting 80 gr. sierras.
